This role can be based in either London or Birmingham working three days a week in office and two day a week remote.

Why this job matters

Our ability to manage the risks in our business underpins everything we do. It is fundamental to our strategic progress, our performance and our building trust with all our stakeholders.

BT has designed and is in the process of implementing and enhancing a new integrated framework for risk, controls and assurance. This is an exciting opportunity to help bring the framework to life in Networks so that it supports quality decision-making and contributes to BT becoming more valuable and resilient. We are looking for the right individual to join our team who not only brings in the right skills and experience in risk and control management, but also has a passion for making the outputs clear and insightful to stakeholders so that it becomes a key factor in BT’s future success.

The Risk and Controls Manager supports the overall governance, maintenance and continuous improvement of the key control framework in Networks, as well as supporting effective risk management of dynamic risks.

The role will ensure that Networks senior management and the Group are provided with clear line of sight on the effectiveness of the control environment and are able to use the output to prioritise and course correct where required.

What you’ll be doing

Project support:

Lead the end‑to‑end delivery of a project to evolve the current tooling solutions into effective, insight‑driven tools for Networks. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Engaging with stakeholders across Networks to understand their needs, defining requirements, enhancing data structures, and working with technical teams to implement improvements.
  • Ensuring the enhancements support clearer visibility of risk, controls, actions and programme delivery, enabling better decision‑making across Networks.
  • Maintaining the evolved tooling solution and continuously improving to meet changing stakeholders’ needs.

Risk Management:

  • Support risk owners in the identification and management of Networks risks and associated actions.
  • Facilitate the management of ‘asset level’ risks and issues in Networks, including those associated with TSA Compliance.
  • Contribute towards projects, initiatives and decision points that support the development of a future facing and resilient Networks.

Key Controls:

  • Support the ongoing implementation and oversight of the Key Control Framework across Networks, including close cooperation with Networks control owners, managers and operators on control design, implementation and continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate control changes as required, including communicating changes and amending as required in Artemis, ensuring control activity is accurately reflected.

Stakeholder Management/Support:

  • Represent the Unit Risk and Controls team on various fora and work closely with peers in Group Audit, Risk and Control on sharing best practice and developing group-wide solutions to risk, control and assurance challenges.
  • Train and support the key stakeholders in the 1st line on risk and controls to drive effective adoption of our risk management framework, including the usage of the tooling.
  • Champion, continuously develop and share with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in risk and control.

You'll have the following skills and experience

  • Experience in continuous improvement or tooling optimisation, ideally within a risk, controls, audit or programme environment, with a track record of simplifying processes and enabling better insight through tooling.
  • Experience writing reports and presentations for senior leadership teams
  • Risk and Control Frameworks: Experience of risk management and control (e.g. control design, implementation, assessment, assurance, reporting) frameworks and tools, including corporate governance structures.
  • Stakeholder engagement and management: strong skills working with diverse groups of stakeholders and the ability to relay complex concepts in a simple, straightforward manner.
  • Strong project management capability, including setting scope, managing timelines, coordinating technical and business teams, and ensuring high quality delivery.
  • Data Management and Reporting: The ability to manage and analyse large data sets and prepare clear and insightful reporting and metrics.
