Job Description

Why this job matters

Network Cloud is BT’s private, OpenStack‑based cloud platform, providing the secure and resilient foundation on which critical BT and third‑party network functions are deployed. As the platform continues to grow, the way new tenants are onboarded has a direct impact on the security, resilience, and compliance of the entire environment.
The Network Cloud Onboarding team is responsible for ensuring that tenants are integrated into Network Cloud in a consistent, secure, and supportable way from day one. This role sits at the heart of that onboarding process, owning the delivery of network connectivity and ensuring that designs, interconnects, and security controls are correctly implemented before services go live.
A key driver for this role is Interstellar, BT’s strategic programme to achieve and sustain compliance with the Telecom Security Act (TSA). New tenant onboarding is a critical control point for TSA, and this role ensures that secure‑by‑design networking principles are embedded upfront. By enforcing approved architectures, segmentation, firewalling, and controlled connectivity, the role reduces risk across shared infrastructure and prevents legacy or non‑compliant designs from entering the platform.
Working closely with tenants, platform engineering teams, and network service providers such as Omninet and 21C, the Cloud Network Engineer enables tenants to consume Network Cloud services quickly and safely without compromising existing workloads. This includes ensuring that all new connectivity aligns with governance standards, operational models, and long‑term support requirements.

This job is hybrid (3 days in office) in either Manchester / Ipswich or London

What you’ll be doing

  • Accountable for delivering network connectivity required to onboard tenants onto the Network Cloud platform, enabling secure and reliable consumption of platform services.
  • Designs, builds, tests, and validates tenant network connectivity, including firewalling, routing, and inter-site connectivity, in line with Network Cloud standards and architectures.
  • Acts as the primary network engineering point of contact during tenant onboarding, working directly with tenants and internal teams to understand and deliver end to end connectivity requirements.
  • Provides ongoing technical support to tenants for network connectivity, including changes, enhancements, and issue resolution post‑onboarding.
  • Works closely with Omninet, 21C, and internal network services to deliver end‑to‑end connectivity solutions across data centres, cloud platforms, and external networks.
  • Integrates network changes into CI/CD pipelines and automated workflows to improve consistency, quality, and speed of connectivity delivery.
  • Ensures all network implementations align with security principles, platform controls, and risk management requirements within the Network Cloud environment.
  • Produces and maintains network design documentation, onboarding artefacts, and operational handover material to support transition into live operations.
  • Supports complex connectivity incidents and escalations, contributing to troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and service improvement actions.
  • Engages with internal stakeholders including service management, security, platform, and operations teams to ensure network connectivity is delivered and supported effectively.
  • Contributes to the continual improvement of Network Cloud networking standards, onboarding processes, and connectivity patterns.
  • Supporting the delivery of new products and service on the platform, following the AIS and ITIL frameworks.

Skills Required for the Role

  • Experience working with carrier or backbone connectivity services such as Omninet and 21C, or equivalent services.
  • Experience delivering network changes through CI/CD pipelines, including infrastructure as code, version control, and automated testing.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with tenants, suppliers, and internal engineering and operational teams.
  • Ability to translate business and application requirements into secure, scalable, and supportable network designs.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across complex, multi‑domain network paths involving internal platforms and external providers.
  • Understanding of network security principles and how they apply in shared cloud platforms.
