Working Style: 3 days a week from office, 2 days from home

Why this job matters

An exciting opportunity exists to join the synchronisation team within specialist platforms. This is to manage existing timing capabilities used in BT’s fixed and mobile networks and work on new cutting-edge technology that will form the foundation of BT’s timing infrastructure for many years to come. The purpose of this role is to:

  • Design, develop, test and implement synchronisation solutions that support our service platforms and customers at scale covering various forms of transport technology including Ethernet and IP.
  • Manage the whole technology cycle of the in-life platforms plus security to keep our customers connected and safe. These platforms underpin many billions of pounds of service platform revenue. This includes supporting delivery, in life and security, including the increasingly important TSA aspects.
  • Develop road maps, manage budgets and implement technology improvements to keep the platforms up to date and cost effective, whilst improving operational performance for our customers.
  • Use knowledge of future technology and research activities to benefit of the platform. Use these developments when appropriate within BT’s strategic timing platforms to keep ahead of the market and to meet our customer requirements.
  • Continue to simplify the timing estate to make it simpler and cost effective to manage and run

What you'll be doing

  • Accountable in a small team for Platform management, design, planning and test of synchronisation both on the core timing platforms and across the various transport technologies that carry timing. This covers core Ethernet/IP, access and customer sited equipment and various forms of optical and transmission technology.
  • Accountable for day-to-day management of key parts of the timing platforms and timing distribution and delivery of detailed documentation that covers.
  • Accountable for In-life customer experience and health of the platform, including platform security, creation of specific platform roadmaps and associated budgets, service and platform related deliverables and overall platform sustainability, commissioning, configuration, testing and any other works on or affecting the platform and its services.
  • Drives improvements via platform upgrades to reduce the complexity of infrastructure, whilst ensuring service and demand requirements are proactively met using simplified solutions.
  • Owns the infrastructure evolution and drives the technical strategy, managing the roadmap and associated budget including whole life cost and 3rd party spend. This includes forward looking technology research, evaluation and management of new technology including but not limited to new PNT technology, atomic clocks and distribution technology to support future mobile technology and applications.

What you’ll bring

MANDATORY

  • Strong Network Design, Test and Integration skills with a solid understanding of our ethernet based converged core and access network technologies with a track record working in this space using agile methodology where appropriate.
  • Comfortable working with high level concepts and low-level detail at both the equipment and network level to help develop and implement internal BT solutions and proof of concepts that may be turned into solutions or products and to help resolve complex problems. Manages major escalations and ensures recovery actions are implemented.
  • Strong communication skills - engages with and presents to colleagues, senior managers and directors, across platform, design, strategic vendors and with external customers.
  • Matrix-management of teams and resources to ensure alignment to roadmaps, technical strategy, technology introduction and delivery.
  • Expertise in managing platforms. This includes support for products and interfaces with other BT platforms, operations and customer channels.
  • Professional Certifications and qualifications in appropriate network technologies.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Member of a professional body e.g. Institution of Engineering and Technology or similar with a track record in technology ideally both academically and practically.
  • Awareness of synchronization technology, timing technology and techniques used in an Ethernet / Packet network.
