About the role
The Software Engineering Specialist plays a critical role in delivering BT’s engineering strategy and roadmap in support of Home Sales and Orbit platforms, which underpin key customer‑facing and revenue‑generating journeys.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, this role executes advanced engineering activities while partnering closely with product, architecture, and delivery teams. The role focuses on ensuring delivery stability, platform modernisation, and engineering excellence, while driving innovation through modern frontend technologies and AI‑enabled engineering practices.
The position directly supports BT’s commercial strategy by strengthening in‑house technical capability, reducing dependency risk, and enabling predictable, high‑quality delivery at scale.
What you’ll be doing
Deliver the engineering strategy to ensure high‑quality outcomes are delivered on time and within budget, with improved predictability and measurable results.
Execute complex technical decisions, including architecture and technology choices, balancing short‑term delivery needs with long‑term platform transformation.
Design, build, and support large‑scale, high‑performance digital platforms supporting Home Sales journeys.
Contribute to and execute technical roadmaps, including the transition from OutSystems to modern React‑based architectures.
Solve complex and strategic technical challenges using advanced engineering knowledge and industry best practices.
Drive engineering and operational excellence initiatives, continuously improving performance, quality, and maintainability.
Apply AI‑driven solutions and accelerators to improve engineering productivity and delivery efficiency.
Write, test, review, and maintain high‑quality code; debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production issues when required.
Implement new architectures, standards, and methods for large‑scale enterprise systems.
Identify and reduce technical debt through sustainable, long‑term engineering solutions.
Evaluate and implement tools and automation supporting CI/CD, continuous delivery, and developer productivity.
Mentor and guide other software engineers, acting as a senior technical resource within the team.
Champion modern engineering practices and share knowledge on emerging technologies and trends.
Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and engineering excellence across the organisation.
Essential Skills / Experience
Strong experience delivering software in large‑scale enterprise environments
Proven expertise in OutSystems (Web, Reactive, ODC) or comparable low‑code platforms
Hands‑on experience with React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating external services
Strong understanding of application architecture, scalability, and performance optimisation
Proven ability to independently resolve complex technical problems
Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to technical leadership
Solid understanding of Agile delivery and the Software Development Lifecycle
Desirable Skills / Experience
Experience supporting platform migration or modernisation programmes
Hands‑on exposure to AI, automation, or AI‑driven engineering accelerators
Experience with cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS)
Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and test automation frameworks
Experience working on customer‑facing digital journeys within regulated environments
Background in telecom, broadband, sales, or large‑scale digital platforms
