Function: Service

Location: Birmingham, London or Sheffield

Salary: Competitive

About the role

As a Site Reliability Engineering Specialist, you’ll drive the performance, resilience, and reliability of critical HMRC network services through advanced monitoring, alerting, and automation. You’ll play a key role in evolving and optimising the tools that underpin the estate—resolving complex incidents, enhancing efficiency, and collaborating with technical teams and partners to deliver continuous improvement. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative engineer who enjoys solving challenges at scale and making a measurable impact across a high-profile, mission-critical environment.

Please note you must either hold or be eligible for SC (Security Clearance) for this role, which will require a minimum of 5 years working history in the UK to be eligible.

What you’ll be doing

• Support and enhance network tooling applications across BT and customer estates, ensuring reliable monitoring and automation across critical services
• Configure, deploy, and manage virtualised environments, driving seamless operations through proactive troubleshooting and optimisation
• Evaluate and introduce new tooling capabilities to maximise network visibility and improve overall monitoring coverage
• Integrate systems using APIs and contribute to building scalable automation pipelines that improve efficiency and reduce manual effort
• Produce clear, high-quality technical documentation, including processes, procedures, and business cases, aligned to internal quality frameworks

Essential Skills / Experience

• Understanding of ITIL practices with the ability to apply incident management principles in a live support environment
• Experience working with server operating systems such as Windows Server or Linux, alongside virtualised environments like VMware
• Ability to create clear, user-friendly documentation covering deployment best practices, tooling, and automation (including CI/CD)
• Familiarity with a range of technologies including Python, JavaScript, SQL, PowerShell, REST/SOAP APIs, GitLab, and Ansible

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Ability to provide detailed and consumable documentation around best practices for deployment of tooling applications, automation including CI/CD.

• Experience integrating services and building end-to-end automation pipelines, with exposure to platforms such as ServiceNow
