Our mobile test and innovation labs is the place where we integrate the future, as early as we can, to ensure that the future architecture and services provide EE and BT’s customers with a brilliant service from our mobile network.
The purpose of Mobile Test & Innovations Labs is to design, integrate/build, test, and deliver market-leading converged Mobile and Fixed network services. The success of the function is based upon delivering stable, best in class, converged services using the latest technologies – transforming our network with 5G and Network Function Virtualisation. We are innovators who make future services happen.

The Policy Core team support and manage the build, integration, test and operation of multiple Lab’s environments for developing and testing new services for our customers.

You will be part of a dynamic team of expert engineers ensuring that Testing, Design and Operations teams are able to use the EE Labs environments. You will contribute to build new services and refine existing services in line with our Customer Experience and Network Leadership goals. You will be working at the forefront of your domain to try out new capability before it goes to market and to reduce the manual effort in managing the network function

This role is hybrid (3 days in office) in either Borehamwood or Bristol

BPSS Clearance eligibility is required for this role

What you’ll be doing

  • Own and be accountable for the build, operation & maintenance of packet core platforms in our innovation labs including inputting to delivery plans, integration of platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams within
  • Mobile including Design, Operations, Development, Quality Assurance & Leading technical discussions and investigations across mobile core networks.
  • Support incident, change, problem, risk, and vulnerability management. Tracing network issues and investigating dataflows using network tools available (CNOM/Wireshark/NetScout)
  • Drive and maintain alignment of the Test Environments with reference to the live EE network
  • Champion and drive continuous improvement for the service that we offer to our key stakeholders – Test, Design and Operations. Promoting and encouraging effective automation solutions for our mobile core.
  • Work co-operatively with other business communities and third parties, to improve service performance, quality, and customer experience.
  • Lead the config changes with CICD pipeline and drive the successful implementation within all of the Labs environments.
  • Line manage a small squad (typically 2–6 engineers) comprising L2/L3 engineers and specialists.

Skills Required for the Role

  • Expert knowledge of Cloud Native Core.
  • Strong understanding of 5G/LTE architecture, Policy Control Function (PCF) call flows, and protocols (BGP, PFCP, GTPv2, Diameter, SIP).
  • Linux administration (OEL/RedHat), networking design/operations, MySQL DB, and Kubernetes administration/troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in Ansible, Terraform, Git, Jenkins, Python, and Unix Shell scripting.
  • Familiarity with OSS tools and tracing systems (CNOM, Wireshark, Prometheus, Netscout).
  • Knowledge of network security, firewall implementations, and vulnerability management.
  • Experience implementing reliability engineering and automation for patching, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Line management experience in an operational context, with strong vendor/stakeholder management and clear communication skills.

Experience Required for the Role

  • Proven experience in a technical role within a telecom organization, managing support and maintenance of cloud core platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux administration and automation tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Practical involvement in core network deployments, feature testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end mobile services, Network Cloud, IP, and transport capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to introduce automation for operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Experience in line management or leading technical teams in a 24×7 operational environment.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and clear communication skills.
