Job Description

BMT is a leading global consultancy in design, engineering, science, and risk management in the maritime sector, known for excellence and innovation.

With 1,300+ experts across the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, we help clients make informed decisions by delivering practical solutions, with the environment and sustainability at their core. As an employee-owned company, we reinvest profits into technology, strategic growth, and profit sharing, driving a safer, more efficient future.

Join our Coastal and Maritime team at BMT as a Senior Coastal Consultant. We are seeking experienced engineers at a Senior to Principal level to support our growing program of work.

Our Australian team of 50+ coastal engineers and scientists has a strong reputation of delivering high quality work in design of coastal infrastructure, boating facilities and coastal protection. We also work in coastal modelling, adaptation planning, nature-based coastal protection, dredging, port planning and offshore wind.

We are looking for coastal specialists with expertise in either Coastal Structures Engineering, Coastal or Metocean Modelling, or Coastal Management. This role is open to applicants across our BMT east coast offices, particularly Brisbane or Melbourne.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Contribute to a diverse range of coastal and offshore projects by undertaking coastal hazard assessments, supporting planning and adaptation for coastal hazards, and/or designing coastal protection works for private and public sector clients.
  • Lead the design of coastal infrastructure across Australia including seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, groynes, jetties, marinas, wharves, boat ramps, and other coastal protection projects including beach nourishment.
  • Manage small to large scale projects and lead the engagement with the end client.
  • Be part of a cross-discipline team, working with other coastal engineers, maritime structures engineers, mechanical engineers, oceanographers, environmental scientists, naval architects, GIS and approvals specialists.
  • Be a technical leader in the coastal structures area, conducting internal reviews and contributing to continual improvement of quality practices.
  • Providing leadership and mentoring to less experienced team members.
  • Write proposals and provide support with business development and customer relationship management.

About you

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant area of study
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience post-graduation
  • Experience in either Coastal Structures Engineering, Coastal or Metocean Modelling, or Coastal Management.

  • For coastal structures designers – a working knowledge of Australian and/or international standards and guidelines relevant to the design of coastal structures such as seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, groynes etc.
  • Experience in physical modelling of coastal structures is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience working within the engineering/consulting sector including experience with proposals and directly managing customers or external stakeholders
  • Relevant registration with recognised engineering/environmental body including an RPEV/RPEQ or the ability to obtain certification
  • Unrestricted and permanent work rights in Australia
  • A passion for the coast and saltwater environments
