About the role

Submarines are some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. According to a 2021 Financial Times article “Nuclear-powered submarines are the “most complex machines that humans make, even more so than the space shuttle”[1]. As a Naval Architect in our expanding Submarine Naval Architecture Team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of these submarine assets for both our UK and international customers.

As a member of the team, you will get involved in solving engineering challenges through supporting the Naval Architectural aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our UK and international customers in procuring new submarines that meet their needs to improving the safety and availability of UK submarines through the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses, and design changes. More specifically you may expect to get experience of undertaking:

• Surveys on submarines to support design changes;

• 3D modelling and naval architectural calculations to support concept design development and design changes;

• Structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis;

• Stability assessments using the Paramarine® Naval Architecture software;

• Hydrodynamic assessments using in house tools and Computational Fluid Dynamics;

• Engineering assessments to support submarine life extensions; and

• Secondments to industry and the UK MOD to broaden your experience.

Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to support; enhancing global understanding of submarine naval architecture issues, the development of future submarine design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools and processes.

As a member of the Naval Architecture Capability, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our full portfolio, such as surface ships, allowing you to broaden your experience outside of submarines should you wish to.

The role is based at our offices in Bath, UK and occasional travel may be required to customer sites both in the UK and overseas. While the role is nominally based at our offices in Bath, we would be happy to discuss working patterns, hours and location and we do have offices in Bristol, Glasgow, London, Plymouth and Southampton.

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

About you

To be successful in the role you will be someone who thrives on new challenges, is motivated by variety and has a strong desire to build on your experience and have:

• An HNC/HND/Foundation Degree or Bachelors/Masters degree or postgraduate qualification in Naval Architecture or similar subject;

• Practical and relevant experience of conventional or nuclear submarine Naval Architecture is preferred;

• Membership of a recognised professional body including being proactively engaged with achieving professional status through developing your own skills and capabilities;

• Good analytical and problem-solving skills with experience of completing your work to time and quality through excellent organisational skills despite competing priorities;

• Experience of liaising with customers and communicating your work in a clear and concise manner through meetings, written reports and/or presentations; and

• Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites.

The successful candidates will need to hold, or be eligible to obtain, UK security clearance at SC level.

Missing skills? Let us be the judge! BMT are passionate about people; we recognise that technology moves quickly and that no one can learn everything, which is why we seek those who can adapt and demonstrate the aptitude to learn. With enthusiasm and the right attitude, we can help you discover your potential.
