From the depths of the ocean, to the far reaches of space, there’s no limit to where a career at BAE Systems could take you.

Job Description:

In this role, you will be responsible for managing Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) operations and governance activities, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and procedures. You will also provide technical oversight and guidance for NDT investigations, supporting accurate analysis and effective problem resolution.

Core Duties:

  • Supervise a small multidisciplinary team of industry certified NDT Technicians using administration tools e.g. SAP to monitor working hours and absence
  • Ensure that team members are always applying Safety rules and initiatives e.g. dynamic risk assessment, SLAM, SHIELD, etc
  • Manage resource to cover shift patterns and operations support
  • Liaise with Product Authorities, Third Party Assessors and other interested parties and stakeholders in relation to trends revealed by defect detection
  • Work with suppliers to develop and accept (via Factory Acceptance and Commissioning tests) automated NDT systems to ensure that our testing facilities are at the forefront of emerging technologies in this field
  • Ensure that all NDT equipment is maintained and calibrated in line with international and national standards and customer requirements
  • Take an active part in supporting the Quality Team in application of the Quality Management System
  • Be part of and contribute to the BAE NDT Community of Practice

Essential Skills:

  • You will have comprehensive working knowledge of NDT techniques, preferably MPI, DPI, ET and UT, perhaps demonstrated by lapsed or current certification
  • You will have the willingness and ability to work towards a Level 3 NDT qualification
  • You will be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, instructions and specifications
  • You will be able to clearly disseminate NDT requirements and the content of reports to all levels of stakeholders

The team:

The NDT department at Washington is a very recent development that has come into existence due to ever increasing customer demands, product improvement and regulatory body intervention.

Although it is a relatively small team, Washington has NDT requirements that rival the larger BAE facilities in respect of the types of NDT techniques caried out on site.

We have “access all areas” in respect of product secrecy and are therefore seen as a high integrity, trusted, verification resource.

Any career in the department will inevitably result in individual development with qualifications and equipment being dictated by the increasing integrity and complexity of the product specifications.
