Job title: Senior Mechanical Engineer – Welding

Location: Barrow-in-Furness/Sheffield – We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements. Please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: £50,817 + dependent on skills and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that welding specifications and inspection acceptance criteria are met. As well as supervising and documenting welding operations
  • Assessing welding or casting non-conformances and defects, providing technical assessments and solutions on welds when applicable
  • Leading the development of solutions to technical issues as a member of a project team, reporting to Technical Leads and directly to the customer
  • Leading and/or supporting solutions to production and manufacturing technical queries raised by suppliers, internal stakeholders (i.e. Operations Team) and non-conformance reports within required project time frames
  • Developing design solutions based on customer requirements, validating, and verifying through the design process
  • Reviewing and checking design work and technical reports, providing help and direction to less experienced engineers
  • Carrying out technical analysis and investigations, and preparing reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or a high level of experience within an engineering environment, whilst having experience writing and reviewing technical reports and specifications
  • Design experience in a multi-disciplined, production and/or manufacturing environment, answering technical queries and non-conformance reports. Experience performing structural/stress analysis, and is familiar with product data management (PDM) tools to configuration manage data
  • Working knowledge of technical office processes, standards and standard instructions (i.e. Business Management System (BMS) and Life Cycle Model (LCM)). Familiarity with engineering drawing standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Experience working with welding codes standards and requirements
  • Experience assessing welded structures (desirably titanium), determining their suitability through analysis and providing technical solutions and conclusions to non-conforming welds or casts

Desirable:

  • Previous experience assessing welds on pressure vessel and shell structures, ensuring compliance with welding requirements, codes and standards (desirably Titanium)

The Weapon Systems UK Mechanical Engineering Team:

As part of the Weapon Systems UK Mechanical Engineering team you will be involved in supporting technical changes to our existing product portfolio (i.e. M777 towed howitzer, 4.5” MK.8 MOD 1 Naval Gun, AS90 Self Propelled Howitzer & 105 Light Gun) through analysis, concept design and tests and trials. This role also allows you to put forward your innovative ideas and solutions to the next generation of weapon platforms for the future battle space.
