Job Description:

The Senior Data Governance Engineer is a key member of the data management team, supporting a programme generating large volumes of product data as ship design develops. The role works closely with programme stakeholders to identify critical systems, data entities, and end‑to‑end data flows.

You will provide insight into data dependencies, strengthen data governance practices, and promote high data quality. A core part of the role is driving behavioural change to embed strong data governance and data‑driven culture across the programme.

Core duties:

  • Support the delivery of the Date Governance/Assurance framework to the RCD (River Class Destroyer) Programme
  • Support the development of measures for assessing the benefit to the business of data governance and assurance, measuring the effectiveness and feeding it back to senior management
  • Delivery of data governance and assurance awareness and training across the business
  • Identify and maintain a community of Data Owners, Stewards and Custodians
  • Supporting the RCD (River Class Destroyer) Programme on understanding their data quality issues and providing support and advice on how they are to be resolved
  • Ensuring the resolution of data quality issues are completed and suitable processes are in place to stop repeat of issue

Essential Skills:

  • Degree-qualified (or with equivalent experience) in a relevant technology, engineering, science, or IT discipline, and either holding or working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution
  • Data, Governance & Quality Expertise: Proven experience implementing Data Governance/Assurance frameworks, Data Quality and Data Management, with strong emphasis on information integrity, quality measurement, process adherence, and process mapping
  • Engineering Systems Knowledge & Tools: Solid understanding of engineering lifecycle governance for complex products, including design-to-build transition; familiarity with company-to-company data transfer, BOM and document management, and key engineering toolsets (e.g. Windchill, CAD, dashboards, business reporting). Experience with warship or large System-of-Systems design is advantageous

River Class Destroyer Data Governance Team:

The River Class Destroyer Data Governance team at BAE Systems work as part of the Systems Engineering team reporting to the Chief Engineer. Data Governance plays a key role in developing and implementing data governance frameworks and processes across the RCD programme. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a global scale, gaining exposure to diverse business areas while contributing directly to the delivery of our data strategies. The role involves engaging with stakeholders to facilitate governance expectations, define requirements for data, and support the creation, maintenance and delivery of enterprise-wide data governance activities. You will also be responsible for establishing and assuring data policies, standards and practices, helping to improve the data quality and management of our information assets.
