About the OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity to join us as a Senior Commercial Officer within our Surface Ships, Combat Systems line of business where you will be primarily supporting the Research and Technology teams leading innovation activities. Your contribution will play a key role in shaping the commercial foundations and successful delivery of projects across multiple portfolios. You will provide critical commercial guidance, ensure robust governance, and manage intellectual property and rights for both the Customer and the business, all while supporting the broader mission of the Australian Defence Forces.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will be working closely with Project Managers and functional SME’s across the business, demonstrating a strong ability to partner with the business to achieve the desired outcomes.

The role is located between Tonsley and Osborne, with Tonsley being our Innovation and Factory of the Future premises, offering a unique opportunity to work within a world-class precinct where industry, research, and startups collaborate to turn advanced manufacturing ideas into real-world solutions. You will also work collaboratively with colleagues across other major cities in Australia, contributing to nationally integrated teams and outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Building and maintaining both internal and external stakeholder relationships (including those with customers and other third parties)
  • Provide specialist commercial advice to Project Managers and the wider business
  • Support to all contract activities including review of business requirements, drafting and negotiation of terms and conditions, and liability risk assessments.
  • Assess the Intellectual Property rights for new and existing projects and maintain appropriate records.
  • Support to new business opportunities, Contract and Bid Status Reviews
  • Ensuring that the businesses financial and commercial exposures are addressed through appropriate commercial contract frameworks such as export controls, finance, product safety (including insurance) and intellectual property rights
  • Ensuring adherence to commercial and other relevant corporate governance requirements

About YOU

You’ll have:

  • Relevant experience that has provided you with a good understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Senior Commercial Officer
  • Team orientation with a high level of written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders of all levels and from a range of disciplines
  • A curious mind-set and ability to solve problems with a can do attitude
  • An ability to work as part of a team or independently with little supervision and guidance and using your own experience, judgement and initiative
  • Adept at building and maintaining excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Flexible and agile with a lean in approach
  • Computer literacy, with intermediate knowledge of MS Suite. Familiarity with tools like SharePoint and Oracle is desirable
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications desirable
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain NV1 Government Security Clearance
