Role Description:
The Supportability Engineer (Obsolescence) operates primarily within the sustainability and availability risk domain, supporting the identification, assessment, and mitigation of obsolescence impacts across mechanical, electrical and combat systems. The role focuses on not only applying engineering judgement, data analysis, and structured processes in the office but combines this with a practical, in the field presence, jumping onboard ships at Portsmouth Naval Base, speaking with ships staff, investigating obsolescence issues and reporting back – all to ensure continued in-service availability.
Core Duties:
- Analyse engineering, supply chain, and support data to identify and resolve emerging obsolescence issues, escalating where required
- Contribute to the development of obsolescence resolution options (e.g. substitutions, lifetime buys, minor design changes) and supporting senior engineers in evaluating trade-offs
- Interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation to support impact assessments and data integration activities
- Investigate and respond to queries related to obsolescence data and system impacts, ensuring timely and coherent responses
- Conduct onboard surveys across various vessel classes to identify, assess, and document equipment and components that have become obsolete, supporting lifecycle management and replacement planning
- Liaise with internal stakeholders (engineering, supply chain, support) to ensure relevant data inputs are captured and understood
Essential Skills:
- You will have good general engineering knowledge (Mechanical, Electrical or Combat Systems)
- You will have the ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
- You will have awareness of obsolescence drivers and basic mitigation approaches alongside the importance of regulatory compliance and potential rule sets
- You will preferably come from a Maritime /Marine/Royal Navy or Commercial background with an awareness of the defence industry
The team:
As part of an integrated Supportability Engineering Hub, the role is not limited to a single discipline. You will develop broader supportability competencies and actively contribute across adjacent areas such as maintenance planning, technical publications, and supportability analysis. This flexible, cross-skilled approach enables the team to respond dynamically to programme priorities and deliver cohesive through-life engineering outcomes.
