APM Terminals

We are seeking a detail-oriented Reefer Technician to be responsible for the inspection, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of refrigerated containers (“reefers”) within the port environment. This role ensures that temperature‑controlled cargo—such as fruits, vegetables, fish, pharmaceuticals, and other perishables—remains in optimal condition throughout its stay at the Port of Ghana. The technician works closely with terminal operations, shipping lines, and cargo owners to guarantee compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Reefer Monitoring & Inspection

  • Conduct routine inspections of refrigerated containers upon arrival, during storage, and prior to dispatch.

  • Verify temperature settings, ventilation modes, humidity levels, and operational status.

  • Record and report temperature readings and equipment performance in the terminals and at the depots

  • Identify and troubleshoot alarms, faults, or abnormal conditions on all import and export reefers at MPS, GPHA and APMT reefer dept

  • Lead time for response to vessel call outs must adhered, to avoid delays to vessels at the port as come with huge cost to the shipping line. (30mins to 1hr) max .

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on reefer units (e.g., Carrier, Thermo King, Daikin, Star Cool).

  • Replace or repair faulty components such as compressors, sensors, controllers, fans, and electrical wiring.

  • Conduct pre‑trip inspections (PTI) and ensure units meet shipping line standards.

  • Ensure that all plugging point at the reefer area is working well and safe.

  • Report any unsafe seen /practice at the reefer powerhouse.

Operational Support

  • Assist in plugging and unplugging reefer containers safely and efficiently.

  • Ensure proper power supply distribution and report any electrical issues.

  • Support vessel operations by preparing reefers for loading and verifying settings before departure.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all port safety protocols, including lock‑out/tag‑out procedures and PPE requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) regulations and MPS safety directives after induction is given.

  • Ensure to report at safety desk when assigned to work at vessel side and in the stacks where reefers are plugged.

  • Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly for all safety issues to be address on time and promptly

  • Ensure to have GEMBA walk in the depot twice in a week and have all safety observations reported in fatal 5 .

Communication & Coordination

  • Liaise with supervisor and make sure all safety issues are address don’t compromise on safety when working.

  • Provide timely updates on faults, repairs, and operational risks.

  • Work collaboratively with the team’s members during peak operations.
