Job Description
Purpose / Summary
The Lean Intern will support the Lean Team at APM Terminals in analyzing and improving operational processes across Yard, Vessel, Gate, Rail, and key support functions. The intern will contribute to stronger data visibility, more effective problem‑solving, and accelerated improvement initiatives. This role provides hands‑on exposure to Lean concepts, process mapping, standard work creation, and performance analytics while working in a fast‑paced terminal environment.
Key Responsibilities
Process & Data Analytics
Collect and organize operational data for analysis and reporting.
Assist in building dashboards and visual performance metrics (Excel/Power BI).
Identify inefficiencies, trends, and improvement opportunities.
Kaizen & Continuous Improvement
Support preparation and documentation for Kaizen events and gemba walks.
Update action plans, improvement trackers, and workshop outputs.
Help map current and future state processes.
Standard Work & Documentation
Develop and refine SOPs, standard work, and process maps.
Contribute to visual management tools and workflow documentation.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Partner with Operations, HSSE, Planning, Gate, and Support teams to gather insights.
Participate in performance reviews and improvement discussions.
Prepare summaries, reports, and presentations for Lean leadership.
Critical Qualifications / Skills / Experience
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations Management, Business, or related field (December/May 2027 completion preferred).
Interest in operations, logistics, supply chain, and process improvement environments.
Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement concepts is a plus but not required.
Eligible to work in the United States.
Technical Skills & Competencies Required
Strong analytical skills with the ability to work with and interpret operational data.
Proficiency in Excel required; familiarity with Power BI or other visualization tools is a plus.
Ability to document processes clearly and contribute to structured problem solving.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating across functional teams.
Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt quickly, and work in a dynamic operational environment.
Professionalism, sound judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and mobile applications.
FLSA Status : Non-exempt
Work Schedule: Interns will work full-time during the summer and part-time during the academic year. No overtime.
Salary: $25 - $30/hr

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal – with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books, or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will have to withstand exposure to outdoor/adverse working conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally noisy.
Internships are to provide meaningful training and work experience for college/Master’s/PhD students pursuing academic studies. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits. Interns are “at will” and can be terminated at the discretion of the company with or without cause or with or without prior notice.
