Job Description

APM Terminals

As part of the Elizabeth Upgrade project the full electrical system of the existing container terminal will require to be overhauled and partially rebuilt. As the scope of the project includes the decarbonization of the facility the demand on the electrical infrastructure will significantly increase and the new setup needs to cate for this.

The objective of this position is to drive managing, directing and controlling the delivery of the civil contract packages. This includes marine and civil infrastructure, utilities, and buildings.

The overall scope of this project entails the design, civil works (marine and yard facilities), interfaces with equipment deliveries (STSs, RTGs and other equipment), associated IT components, integration with the local running Port Elizabeth business and support of the operational startup.

Appetizer

At APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations, we enable global trade and drive sustainable growth. What drives us forward is a mindset of always improving — observing how work happens, identifying what creates value, and removing what gets in the way. We constantly look for smarter, simpler, and safer ways of operating. If you thrive in environments where people value learning and are committed to continuously improve daily operations, join us and be apart of our journey.

The Role

As our Civil Construction Manager, you will lead the execution and delivery of civil contract packages supporting the Elizabeth Terminal Upgrade Project. Your scope will include marine and yard infrastructure, utilities, buildings, and critical interfaces with equipment, technology, and ongoing terminal operations.

Reporting to the Head of Asset Delivery, you will help ensure that civil works are delivered safely and in line with the project’s approved scope, schedule, budget, quality requirements, and operational objectives.

What We Can Offer

At APMT Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and training culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to improvement is driven by Lean principles, ensuring that every team member has the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their careers. Experience a diverse, multinational workplace where your operational insights directly influence how we work.

  • Influence a major terminal modernization program with significant marine, civil, utility, and building scope
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, procurement, HSSE, IT, consultants, and contractors
  • Strengthen your expertise in complex, brownfield construction within an operating container terminal
  • Contribute to technical improvements, lessons learned, and engineering standards across APM Terminals

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution and delivery of marine, civil, utility, yard, and building work packages in accordance with project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives
  • Direct design consultants, project management consultants, contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and quality-control partners throughout design, construction, commissioning, and integration
  • Monitor construction schedules, costs, risks, changes, delays, and dependencies, providing timely reporting and recommending practical corrective actions
  • Develop and review technical specifications, civil designs, method statements, risk assessments, implementation plans, budgets, and detailed construction schedules
  • Coordinate procurement activities and ensure specifications and contract packages align with APM Terminals standards and applicable legal, union, and EPA grant requirements
  • Manage interfaces among civil works, terminal operations, equipment deliveries, maintenance, IT components, commissioning, integration testing, and operational startup
  • Promote visible HSSE leadership and verify that designers and contractors comply with Elizabeth Terminal and APM Terminals safety requirements

What We Are Looking For

  • Continuous improvement mindset: we are looking for someone who brings a strong mindset of continuous improvement – someone who is naturally curious, committed to solving problems at the root, and driven to make things better every day
  • Bring demonstrated experience managing the delivery of marine and civil infrastructure, ideally within container terminals, ports, maritime facilities, or similarly complex industrial environments
  • Apply strong knowledge of civil design, construction methods, project controls, scheduling, cost management, change management, risk management, commissioning, and contractor oversight
  • Build productive working relationships across engineering, operations, maintenance, HSSE, procurement, consultants, vendors, contractors, and senior stakeholders
  • Communicate clearly in English and maintain disciplined project documentation, reporting, escalation, and follow-through using Microsoft Office
  • Hold a university degree in engineering, with civil engineering preferred, or bring an equivalent combination of directly relevant engineering and construction-delivery experience

Location: Elizabeth, NJ (5 days in office)
Salary Expectations: $130K - $150K
