Job Description

Job Title: Junior Standards & Products Engineer

Location: Peterborough (Hybrid Working)

Salary: £32,000

Our Team

Do you want to use your engineering skills to make a real difference? Are you passionate about building sustainable, efficient and high-quality infrastructure that delivers lasting value for customers and the environment?

Over the coming years, Anglian Water will invest almost £3 billion in new and improved assets across our region – from treatment works and pipelines to major new reservoirs. To deliver this ambitious programme, we rely on world-class standards and proven design practices that ensure every project achieves the best balance of safety, sustainability and efficiency.

Our Asset Standards Team plays a key role in achieving this. We’re responsible for developing and maintaining Anglian Water’s internal engineering standards and standard products – the essential tools that guide how our assets are designed, built and operated. By distilling business intelligence, technical expertise and innovation into accessible guidance, we ensure every asset is fit for purpose and built to last.

The Role

We’re looking for a Junior Standards & Products Engineer to join our team and grow their engineering career in a supportive and collaborative environment.

This is an exciting development role where you’ll help maintain and improve Anglian Water’s Minimum Asset Standards (MAS), design manuals and standard products. You’ll support experienced engineers in capturing best practice, embedding innovation and promoting consistency across our delivery partners and internal teams.

You’ll work closely with engineers, designers, operations and procurement specialists across Anglian Water and our alliance partners. Over time, you’ll build your technical understanding and confidence in applying standards, while contributing to real improvements in how we design and deliver assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and improvement of standards:
Assist in refining and maintaining our Minimum Asset Standards (MAS), design manuals and specifications. Help ensure they are aligned with national and international standards (CESWI, WIMES, British Standards) and reflect best practice in safety, sustainability and design efficiency.
  • Contribute to standard product development:
Work with engineering, procurement and innovation colleagues to help capture proven designs and package them into standard products. Support reviews to ensure our standard products remain relevant and compliant with evolving regulations and internal processes.
  • Assist in governance and collaboration:
Participate in meetings and forums that review and approve changes to standards and products. Engage with colleagues to understand business needs and ensure that improvements deliver value across cost, carbon and operational performance.
  • Communicate and share learning:
Help update and maintain internal platforms such as SharePoint to keep standards accessible and up to date. Support the creation of training and communication materials that promote understanding and adoption of our standards and products.

This role offers the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers while developing a strong foundation in technical standards, asset design and collaborative working across a major water company.

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll be an enthusiastic and motivated early-career engineer, keen to apply your technical knowledge to real-world challenges and grow your expertise in infrastructure design and standardisation.

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Process Engineering
  • Some experience in engineering design or construction (through work, placement or study projects)
  • Awareness of water, wastewater or related engineering processes
  • Understanding of design or construction methods and safety principles
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Keen to learn, adaptable and collaborative

You’ll be supported by experienced engineers, with a structured development plan to help you grow into a fully competent Standards & Products Engineer.

Why Join Us?

  • Learn from and collaborate with experienced professionals across Anglian Water and our delivery alliances.
  • Contribute to projects that protect the environment and improve services for millions of customers.
  • Develop a broad understanding of engineering standards, governance and innovation in infrastructure design.
  • Work in a supportive environment that values continuous improvement, learning and inclusion.

Working Arrangements

This role is based in our Peterborough office, with hybrid working and occasional visits to operational or construction sites. You’ll typically spend 2–3 days a week in the office, collaborating with colleagues and learning from the team.

Benefits

As a valued member of the Anglian Water team, you’ll enjoy:

  • Personal private healthcare
  • Life cover – 8x annual salary paid to dependents
  • 26 days’ annual leave (rising with service) plus bank holidays, with flexibility to swap for alternative religious holidays
  • Flexible working options
  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double-matches your contributions up to 6%
  • Annual bonus scheme
