Experienced Hydraulic Modeller – Treatment Works Hydraulics & Surge/Transient Analysis
/10
Job Description
Competitive salary depending on skills and experience
Permanent / 37 hours per week / Full-time (with flexibility for part-time working)
Base location either in Peterborough, Lincoln, Colchester or Norwich (depending on your location). Hybrid – 2 days in the office.
We are seeking an experienced hydraulic modeller to join our Chief Engineering Office, someone who brings strong capability in either treatment works hydraulics or surge/transient analysis. Whichever discipline is your strength, we will provide training and mentoring to develop you into a genuine dual-discipline specialist.
What you will be doing
You will deliver high-quality hydraulic modelling that directly shapes how our water and wastewater treatment assets are designed and operated. Depending on your background, this will include some or all of the following:
Treatment works hydraulics: flow distribution analysis, headloss calculations, hydraulic control strategies and process optimisation, typically using tools such as HADES or equivalent software.
Surge and transient analysis: supporting capital scheme delivery and operational decision-making with tools including WANDA, VariSim, or similar platforms.
Across both disciplines, you will build and validate robust models, translate complex outputs into clear risk-based recommendations, and play an active role in assuring modelling quality and growing capability across the team.
Why this role
This is a rare opportunity to join a leading-edge technical team shaping the future of water modelling across the business and the wider industry. You will build deep expertise across both treatment hydraulics and surge modelling, with structured mentoring and targeted technical training. You will have real influence on engineering and operational decisions, with a clear route toward a broader technical leadership
What we are looking for
You will have solid, hands-on modelling experience in at least one of the two disciplines, with the confidence to lead technical studies, navigate operational constraints, and communicate findings to engineering and non-engineering audiences. Experience with HADES, WANDA, VariSim or similar tools is a plus, but what matters most is your strong hydraulic fundamentals and your genuine commitment to continuous professional development
Experience
Extensive experience in a relevant modelling discipline, delivering complex, system-based and strategic projects across the asset management lifecycle
Proven leadership in model build, calibration, verification, and validation, with a deep understanding of data quality, uncertainty, and ambiguity
Experience writing and embedding technical specifications, standards, policies, and procedures
Strong background in data analysis, interpolation, hypothesis development, and evidence-based decision-making
Demonstrated success applying systems thinking across assets, people, process, commercial, and technology considerations
Experience balancing multi-objective criteria such as risk, performance, efficiency, and cost
Proven track record of mentoring, coaching, and training technical colleagues, with measurable outcomes
Experience initiating and leading technical discussions, change, and continuous improvement
Ability to manage and prioritise workload in a complex, fast-moving environment, including influencing others’ time and activities
Experience working effectively in virtual, agile, and collaborative delivery models
Qualifications, Knowledge & Professional Standing
Degree qualified in a relevant discipline or equivalent demonstrable experience
Chartered or working towards chartership/accreditation with a recognised professional body
Deep understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline (e.g. hydraulics, treatment processes, demand analysis, system operation)
Strong knowledge of industry context, policies, frameworks, and initiatives, including interpreting their impact on modelling priorities
Understanding of asset surveys, data collection techniques, data uncertainty, and associated health and safety considerations
High level of personal accountability, with a strong commitment to results and people
