Job Description

Job Description:

Intern - Industrial Flow Simulation

As an Intern, you will embark on a 6-month project to study, profile, analyze and improve the speed, memory usage and overall efficiency of our existing software applications used for discrete event simulations for industrial behavioral models. This role is a unique, two-phase project:

  • Phase 1 : Profiling of Data Structures and Algorithms: Profiling the existing code databases/ repository and identifying key focus areas for the optimization.
  • Phase 2 : Optimization of Data Structures and Algorithms Optimize the data structures and algorithms to improve model run-time performance KPIs.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Performance Analysis: Analyze existing code repositories to identify bottlenecks in existing codebases, focusing on time complexity/ CPU utilization, space complexity/ memory usage, I/O operations, dataset updation mechanisms, etc.
  • Code Refactoring: Implement strategic changes to algorithms, data structures, and code logic to enhance runtime efficiency and reduce memory consumption and computational complexity.
  • Benchmarking: Design and execute performance tests to accurately measure the impact of optimizations and ensure changes do not introduce regressions.
  • Documentation: Document optimization strategies, findings, and best practices for future team reference.
  • Collaboration: Participate in code reviews and collaborate with a team of developers to ensure optimization efforts align with broader architectural goals.

Required skills and experience:

  • Strong Foundational Knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals, including algorithms (e.g., sorting, searching, graph traversal) and data structures (e.g., arrays, linked lists, hash maps, trees, linkedHashMaps).
  • Programming Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the object-oriented programming languages (eg. Java, C++, C#), preferably Java.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen ability to break down complex performance issues into actionable tasks.
  • Good understanding of discrete event simulation and object-oriented principles.
  • A foundational understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to reviewing and modifying existing code without introducing new bugs.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to document and present findings.
