Job Description

About the role

At ScriptRunner, part of The Adaptavist Group, we’re looking for an Engineering Team Lead to lead the team behind Enhanced Search, our powerful Jira Cloud app that gives customers advanced JQL capabilities and helps some of Atlassian’s largest enterprise customers get more from Jira.

This is a role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of people leadership, technical direction, delivery, and product collaboration. You’ll lead a team of five engineers with a mix of experience and specialisms, helping them do their best work while staying close enough to the code and architecture to make strong technical decisions.

You’ll partner closely with Product, Design, QA, and Documentation, shape the roadmap, and play a key role in how the team adopts AI across the software development lifecycle from planning and coding through to review and testing. You’ll also help share those learnings across the wider engineering organisation.

This role will be a 1 year cover assignment working with the Enhanced Search team, before moving on to lead another of the ScriptRunner engineering teams.

What you'll be doing

Lead a strong, healthy team

  • Manage, support, and develop a team of five software engineers
  • Coach individuals in their growth, development, and career progression
  • Create an environment where engineers can do high-quality work and continue to grow
  • Hire and onboard new team members when needed
  • Act as the escalation point for challenges within the team

Drive delivery and technical direction

  • Work with Product Management to set quarterly objectives and deliver against the roadmap
  • Lead delivery planning, team ceremonies, and day-to-day execution
  • Unblock the team and escalate issues where needed
  • Use your technical background to guide architecture, delivery, and engineering decisions
  • Own the quality, security, compliance, and cost of the product in production

Shape ways of working

  • Run retrospectives and turn insights into meaningful improvements
  • Use team metrics to improve delivery and effectiveness
  • Ensure development processes meet legal and compliance standards
  • Lead the team’s use of AI tools and modern development workflows

Collaborate across the business

  • Partner with Product Managers, senior leadership, and other engineering leaders to align priorities and plans
  • Share ideas and practices with other Team Leads and Engineering Managers
  • Work with Atlassian and other partners on technical issues when needed
  • Help shape the wider engineering culture and direction across Adaptavist’s product organisation

Qualifications

What we're looking for

  • A strong technical background and proficiency in at least one major programming language such as Java, TypeScript, or Python
  • Experience leading or managing a software engineering team, including coaching and developing engineers
  • Experience using AI coding tools as part of a team’s development process
  • Experience running agile delivery in Scrum, Kanban, or similar environments
  • Experience building and operating services on AWS or similar cloud platforms, with delivery through CI/CD
  • A solid understanding of distributed systems and REST APIs
  • The ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

A few nice to haves

  • Experience in the Atlassian ecosystem, especially building apps for Jira Cloud
  • Experience with serverless architecture
  • Familiarity with observability tooling for logs, metrics, and tracing
  • Experience supporting enterprise customers
