What we are looking for:

Within Consulting Engineering, our engineers work alongside our Research, Product, Design and Delivery colleagues in truly cross-functional teams to help solve our clients’ problems and - where appropriate - build products and services with them that are ‘Truly Digital’. We believe what we do is a ‘small team sport’, and we hire talented and motivated people who are passionate about working closely with our clients to solve their problems.

As a Lead Engineer;

  • You have had experience in building high performance, highly scalable, fault tolerant systems in the capacity of lead engineer / technical lead (not necessarily in finance!)
  • You can work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and clients to understand their needs, translating and delivering tailored solutions.
  • You have great communication skills who can respond to customer needs and think on their feet.
  • You have excellent written communication skills as well as technical design/documentation ability.
  • You understand how to balance technical perfection with pragmatic delivery, knowing when technical debt is appropriate, and how to manage it.
  • You’re a strong coder, and although you won’t be spending all your time coding, you’ll be adept at mentoring others, reviewing, maintaining coding standards, and you’ll ‘set the bar’ for your engineers.
  • You are comfortable with having design authority and that can take ownership of and be at the forefront of the delivery for entire sub-systems.
  • Server-side Kotlin experience essential, as is experience working within a cloud-based architecture, delivering cloud native solutions.
  • You are comfortable with coaching a small team of engineers (e.g. 3-4) with kindness and empathy, resolving conflicts positively, motivating people, and balancing the needs of the team with those of your stakeholders, customers and your Product, Design and Delivery colleagues.
  • You have some experience operating as a full-stack engineer (we like to use React) 
  • You’re comfortable leading a team in a remote environment, operating asynchronously where appropriate, and you’re able to ensure the team is delivering even if you’re not sitting next to them.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Likely leading a small team, (which might consist of front-end, back-end, platform, QA), designing and building products and services for our clients.
  • Working closely with our Product and Design colleagues to balance requirements and deliver functioning applications and services that our clients love.
  • Working within and across the 11:FS engineering tribe using your skills and experience to improve our technical capabilities.
  • Aligning architecture and approach with our Principal Engineers (and providing justification for divergence, where appropriate)Providing technical mentoring and coaching to more junior engineers.
  • Solving problems ‘at the coalface’ for your project, but also aligning to our engineering principles and core technology choices. 
  • Working with the cross-functional delivery teams who will deliver what you’ve helped design.
