Job Description

A bit about us

Our main focus at Waterstons is to help our customers build a better business by blending technology and strategy. We have offices in the UK and Australia. Our team also work across the globe to provide unique business solutions that directly adds value to our clients’ businesses.

Our clients tell us our people are our greatest strength, and who are we to disagree? We believe in our colleagues, and we make it a priority to reward their hard work. Unlimited holidays, flexible working and private medical healthcare. These are only some of the amazing things we offer.

Did we also mention that we’ve been awarded Gold Investors in People for a fourth consecutive time?

About the role

We’re looking for the right person, not for specific backgrounds. Our dream candidate would be an experienced data professional with a sound understanding of data warehouse design principles, but looking to develop their technical skill set using a range of modern tooling. You will have a passion for data, technology and personal development and be a creative problem-solver with a desire to grow with us. This would be a great role for someone looking to take their first steps in consultancy.

Would you like to learn about Data Lakehouses? How about getting your hands dirty with the latest data engineering tools like Azure Synapse Analytics and Databricks? How about the chance to impress clients with stunning reports in Power BI? If these technologies sound appealing, even if you haven’t used them before, this could be a great opportunity for you.

The Data & Analytics team currently works with several universities and charities, a distributor of frozen foods, a motorway services company and many other businesses.

You’ll be an integral part of a small, ambitious team that is looking to grow sustainably but quickly. If you’re passionate about data, have a desire to build something sustainable and exciting, want to work with a diverse group of people, then we would love to hear from you.

Day to day responsibilities

  • Understanding and listening to our clients and delivering appropriate solutions which may include data exports, building data platforms and developing reports.
  • Delivering projects in partnership with our clients.
  • Discuss wider data requirements and proposing suitable architectures.
  • Have the confidence to challenge clients and suggesting better ways to solve their problems.
  • Training small client teams.
  • Nurturing and supporting junior team members
  • Sharing knowledge within the team.

Some of the skills we are looking for

  • You might not already be a consultant, but you’ll be able to demonstrate how you can use your experience to date to transfer into a consulting role.
  • You’ll have experience working with relational database technologies.
  • You’ll love a good SQL challenge and using your skills to interrogate and shape data.
  • Previously worked with a range of business systems and sources to find and extract data.
  • Built and designed ETL pipelines (really any technology but we use SSIS, Azure Data Factory and Synapse Analytics).
  • You’ll understand how to model data for analytics workloads – specifically dimensional models/star schema.
  • Know how to visualise data effectively - we're not overly bothered about the tool, to be honest; we tend to recommend Power BI to our clients but we've worked with Tableau and Qlik too.
  • Enjoy listening to customer requirements and turning them into a plan for implementation

Nice to have:

  • Understanding some Python would be great, but is by no means essential.
  • Understanding DAX would also be a plus.

The Waterstons Perks

As well as offering a competitive salary, we also have an attractive benefits package including:

  • A healthy work life balance with flexible and agile working being the norm
  • Unlimited holiday allowance
  • Room to grow with supported development opportunities and sponsored training
  • Enhanced family policies
  • If you ever need it, company sick pay and life assurance
  • Supported wellbeing with regular initiatives, an employee assistance program and private medical insurance
  • Flexible benefits such as a dental scheme, eye care support, season ticket loan and cycle to work

We require a security check to be carried out on all colleagues due to the nature of some of our clients’ industries.
