Hours of work, working location and workload are all up to each employee to manage individually with no pressure from management or questions about offline time as long as work is shown to be completed. Working for Waterstons allows me to fit my work around my family and my life outside of work. If I need to take the car to the garage, or I need to take my dog to the vet, or I need to pick my daughter up, I can arrange to take the time I need and continue to work around it. So long as everyone is kept informed and my work is done, I am totally autonomous and given the freedom to arrange my work day.

The level of trust in employees is amazing - it goes throughout the whole company, from the new starters to the experienced. I've been able to travel during work hours, or take longer lunches, without anyone giving it a second glance. My line manager has said they would be happy for me to work from abroad.

The company has given me trust, autonomy, and support; it is everything I need to be effective in my role.

This is not a culture that was driven by Lockdown/Covid.

Its a culture that has always been in place to support the many people who do their work differently for whatever reason, whether it be geography/family/outside commitments, etc..

Very friendly people and a very empowering culture where you're trusted to work and deliver autonomously. Sometimes this results in a lot of work under short deadlines, but other times you have a lot of freedom and flexibility. So as long as you can manage your time well, and focus on keeping a work/life balance you'll be happy here.

The flexibility and autonomy at Waterstons is an absolute joy. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else. We have the context we need to make the best possible decisions for our customers.

The business has a positive company culture and offers good flexibility and perks. Of course these benefits vary depending on the position you hold in the company. For example, more client dependant positions which require attendance to client sites will offer less flexiblity than someone who works a remote role.

The senior management team maintains clear communication with the business and takes pride in the company values which involves putting people first, which is great to see. There are some limitations however due to the maturity of the company, which means higher or newer job types may offer less structure and will require more self-initiative, which might be daunting for some.

Waterstons has had flexible working since inception nearly 30 years ago not just since the pandemic so its part of the overall DNA and managed very well. Unlimited holidays is also a great benefit. People here are measured on contribution, not time spent - and our 'people first' values and culture are well embedded. Looking after our clients and our people and doing right by them is what makes us successful and a great place to work.

Approach to diversity & inclusion

In 2020, like many other businesses, we had a clear wake-up call about diversity, equity, and inclusion in both Waterstons and the wider tech workforce. Though we had formed a DEI working group back in 2019, the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, carrying over to the UK, made it startlingly clear that we could no longer accept or think our lack of diversity was due to our largest office being located in the North East, or the makeup of our recruitment pool. We needed to take real action, own our problem, and become a proactive part of the solution.
