Job Description

Introduction

Learning Executives are the beating heart at the centre of our team, and the driving force towards our mission. Learning Executives are to Up Learn what Software Engineers are to Google, and Creative Executives to Netflix.

From day one you will learn to create groundbreaking education content that is smashing traditional beliefs about what students can achieve. We believe everyone can learn anything with the right teaching, and our courses are now proving that.

Hear what some of our current Learning Executives have to say about the role here.

About us

Up Learn has built the world’s most effective learning experience. We’ve done this by combining cognitive science, instructional theory and artificial intelligence.

Up Learn’s mission is to create the most effective learning experiences in the world, and distribute access to as many students as possible 🙌

Up Learn started with A Levels and developed courses that are:

  • Effective: 97% of students that complete Up Learn courses achieve an A*/A, starting from grades as low as Ds and Es
  • Engaging: 1.6 million hours of learning (and rising) thanks to Up Learn
  • Scaling: tens of thousands of students use Up Learn today, either independently, through one of our 300 schools, or through our university and charity partners
  • Up Learn has been growing fast, and is backed by investors that share our vision, including leading venture capital firm Forward Partners and the Branson family (Virgin). We are growing our incredible, 50+ strong team.

Social impact is critical to Up Learn’s mission - for every student that pays, Up Learn gives a full scholarship to a student who can’t.

    About you

You understand how deeply knowledge enriches your relationship with the world around you. As a result, you don’t confine yourself to one discipline. You might find yourself binge-watching Numberphile videos one evening and reading a literary classic the next, or thinking about the choice architecture in your corner shop one day and studying the ingredients in a shower gel the next time you visit. You frequently find yourself trying to understand something new and are almost uncontrollably excited when given the chance to explain it to another person.

What you’ll do in your first year

The specific mix of work will vary depending on the particular expertise of successful candidates, but is likely to include the following:

    • Learn how to use cognitive science and instructional theory to create the most effective learning experience in the world
    • Research what it takes to develop a deep understanding of a subject and get 100% in an A Level or GCSE qualification
    • Work with a team to design the curriculum for an Up Learn course that will guarantee any student a top grade in that subject
    • Script interactive video lessons that teach and inspire students, and instil a passion for the subject, then work closely with a global team of subject experts, animators, graphic designers, recording artists, audio engineers and freelance tutors to bring your content to life
    • Help design new content and platform features that will result in a deeper understanding and greater exam performance in even less time
    • Ensure content is accurate and complete
    • Develop your ability to learn rapidly and adapt, working at a fast-moving company

    Requirements

    Necessary

    • An A grade or above in at least three A Level subjects (or non-UK equivalent)
    • A 2.1 degree
    • Some experience teaching or tutoring

    Desirable

    • A*s at A Level (or >90% in some subjects for anyone before 2010)
    • 1st class degree
    • 2+ years of professional experience teaching or tutoring
    • Outstanding communicator
    • Strong empathy for others, particularly students
    • Insatiable hunger to learn; you are not satisfied until you understand a concept so well that you can explain it to anyone
    • Meticulous writing skills, and writing hundreds of thousands of words to complete a course does not daunt you
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Leadership experience, whilst at school, university or professionally
    • You seek out ways to improve your work, view all well-intentioned criticism as information, and are comfortable working in an extremely high-frequency feedback culture
    • Passionate about education and want to be part of an ambitious project with the potential to have an impact on millions of people
    • Belief that virtually anyone can learn almost anything, and want to help students achieve remarkable academic results
    • Can work with colleagues towards a common goal, without ego
    • Comfortable working in a fast-growth startup environment, where goals and responsibilities can often change
    • Experience creating educational resources
    • Experience promoting or leading educational reform at any scale, small or large, informed by cognitive science
    • Experience implementing education research

Even if you don’t perfectly tick off every point in our ‘necessary’ or ‘desirable’ categories, if you believe this is where you belong, we’d still love to hear from you.
