Job Description

This is an exciting hands-on opportunity for an experienced electrical professional to step into a highly trusted and business-critical position within United Utilities. As an Authorised Person (Electrical), you will play a frontline role in keeping our sites safe and compliant while working across a wide variety of operational environments every day.

The role comes with a company van as you will be visiting 2-3 United Utilities sites daily across the North West. With a 37 hour working week, Monday to Friday, and participation in a standby rota, this is a role that offers both variety and responsibility. It is suitable for candidates based anywhere in the North West, and you will be based at a location near to your home location to support efficient travel and response across the North West Region.

This is a practical, hands-on position, focusing on HV substation maintenance where your decisions matter, your expertise is valued, and your influence directly safeguards the electrical safety and resilience of our business.

The Role

As an Authorised Person Electrical, you will play a central and highly trusted role in ensuring United Utilities meets its statutory obligations under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. This is a position where your expertise truly matters. You will be at the heart of keeping our High Voltage electrical assets safe, compliant and performing at their best.

Working across Water and Wastewater Process, Network operations and supporting teams across the wider business, you will act as the duty holder for electrical compliance, managing a dedicated budget and leading a small specialist team including a Portable Appliance Tester and Electrical Authorised Persons. Your technical guidance will underpin the effective inspection, assurance and maintenance of our High Voltage systems, ensuring they consistently meet the standards required by EaWR.

In this role, you will also be a key figure during operational incidents, responding when needed and serving as the vital link between the Distribution Network Operator and United Utilities. You will oversee contractors delivering the statutory High Voltage programme of work, managing annual budgets of £0.5 million OPEX and £3 million CAPEX on behalf of the Technical Assurance Manager.

Your remit will stretch across the business as you maintain and monitor electrical compliance reviews, manage both high and low voltage compliance activity and safeguard power supplies for the Wholesale business on behalf of the Head of Renewable Energy and Infrastructure. Throughout, you will provide clear confident electrical advice to field operations and engineering teams, ensuring they have the right information to operate safely and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support during electrical incidents both in and out of hours and act as United Utilities liaison with Distribution Network Operators during events as designated by the Head of Renewable Energy and Infrastructure
  • Support United Utilities employee’s, contractors, and Distribution Network Operator representatives during emergencies ensuring health and safety is coordinated for everyone involved
  • Promote a proactive collaborative approach by working closely with Engineering, Health and Safety, contractors, QA and MAMS teams to update technical data processes procedures survey information and site specific electrical asset data
  • Record, communicate and maintain Electrical Safety Standards along with statutory compliance processes and procedures identifying legislative changes and ensuring United Utilities Water remains fully compliant across the wider business
  • Manage the fixed electrical installation inspection register ensuring all United Utilities Water owned assets are recorded inspected tested and any required remedial work is completed to remain compliant with legal obligations
  • Vet, authorise and maintain records of electrical competence for contractors completing electrical work within the Company as designated by the Head of Renewable Energy and Infrastructure
  • Provide leadership and guidance to operations, maintenance teams, and contractors during investigations into electrical accidents or incidents producing reports and recommending remedial actions while updating the lessons learned database

Skills & experience

  • Electrical HNC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering and capable of appraising proposed electrical designs, specialist knowledge of IET Regulations and also to have an awareness of wider strategic aims of United Utilities and developments in the Water Industry
  • Electrical engineering background with extensive experience and understanding of the requirements for the inspection, testing and maintenance of HV/LV assets, United Utilities Electrical Safety Instructions and related IET Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671).
  • Experience of HV switching, testing and commissioning of HV and Bulk LV systems

Key Skills & Experience

  • Electrical HNC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering with the ability to review and assess proposed electrical designs, strong knowledge of IET Regulations and awareness of the wider strategic aims of United Utilities and developments within the Water Industry
  • Electrical engineering background with extensive experience of inspection testing and maintenance of HV and LV assets along with a thorough understanding of United Utilities Electrical Safety Instructions and the IET Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671
  • Experience in HV switching testing and commissioning of High Voltage and Bulk Low Voltage systems
