Senior DevOps Engineer - Cloud Observability Platform
/10
Job Description
We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.
Every SAP cloud service needs to know what's happening inside it — at any moment, at any scale. Our team builds the platform that makes that possible: a unified OpenTelemetry observability stack routing metrics, traces, and logs across SAP's cloud landscape.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you'll be a technical anchor for this platform — not just delivering within a sprint, but shaping how the work gets done across the team. You'll take end-to-end ownership of complex topics, drive architectural decisions, and be the person others turn to when something is hard.
What you'll own and shape
You won't just deliver sprint commitments — you'll define how they're scoped, sequenced, and executed. You'll take on the topics that cross team boundaries: platform-wide reliability initiatives, architectural improvements to OctoRoute or CaaS, cross-squad dependency resolution, and the kind of deep technical work that requires someone who can hold the full picture.
You'll also be a multiplier. That means meaningful code reviews, pairing on complex problems, knowledge transfer, and mentoring less experienced engineers. Your impact is measured not just by what you ship, but by how much better the team gets because you're in it.
Your work sits at the intersection of cloud-native infrastructure and observability — one of the most strategically important bets in SAP's cloud portfolio right now.
What you bring
You're a senior cloud-native engineer with deep roots in at least one area — Kubernetes, observability, distributed systems — and enough breadth to move across the stack when the problem requires it. You've operated production systems under real pressure and made architectural decisions you can defend.
Essential:
- Deep hands-on experience with Kubernetes — you understand the internals, not just the manifests
- Strong programming skills in Go or another systems language — you write code others learn from
- Experience designing and owning CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows end-to-end
- Solid footing in cloud environments (GCP, Azure, or AWS) at production scale
A strong plus:
- Hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, or distributed tracing at scale
- Experience with Kafka or similar streaming platforms in production
- You've built or maintained Kubernetes operators
- Security and compliance experience in cloud environments — policy enforcement, cert management, audit trails
Mindset:
- You take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks — if the team is stuck, you help unstick it
- You make decisions in the open — document trade-offs, share context, invite pushback
- You mentor naturally — not as a side job, but as part of how you work
- You're comfortable leading a topic without a playbook
Where you belong
Our team is small, cross-functional, and operates with a high degree of autonomy. At T3, you're not just a member of a scrum team — you're one of the people who sets the tone for how the team works.
The team spans three scrum teams — Platform Engineering, Telemetry Engineering, and Tenant Architecture — all working toward the same mission. This role is open across all three. Depending on your background and interests, you may land in Platform Engineering, Telemetry Engineering, or Tenant Architecture — we'll find the right fit together.
You'll work in structured two-week sprints but own how you get there. No micromanagement, no waiting for permission — but you're also expected to bring others along, not just move fast solo.
What makes this team different:
- High-visibility work at SAP scale — the platform your team runs is depended on by engineering teams across the company
- Small team means your architectural decisions matter and are felt immediately
- You'll shape the technical direction of a fast-moving space — OpenTelemetry, Kubernetes operators, cloud-native reliability
- 24x7 on-call participation — you'll be part of keeping production healthy, and at Senior level you'll be one of the people others escalate to
The practicalities:
- Based in Budapest, Hungary
- Hybrid working model
- SAP's full benefits package applies, including flexible working arrangements and parental leave
SAP is committed to equal opportunity. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, career paths, and experiences — including career changers and those returning from a career break.
