COMPANY DESCRIPTION
SAP is the global market leader for business software and related services, and SAP National Security Services Inc.® (SAP NS2®) is an independent U.S. subsidiary, offering SAP solutions with specialized levels of security and support to meet the requirements of U.S. national security and critical infrastructure customers.
Must be a US Citizen; this position requires access to customer data. All internals must have Manager’s approval to transfer.
Our Platform Operations team plays a pivotal role in operating and governing robust cloud infrastructure and platform services that support SAP products within a FedRAMP-authorized, federally secure environment. We are an operations-first organization, prioritizing platform reliability, security, and compliance in everything we do. Our engineers collaborate closely with internal product and security teams to ensure services remain available, current, and aligned to federal standards. We are looking for a highly detail-oriented senior engineer who can bridge platform operations and service ownership — someone with deep SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) expertise who can lead, govern, and drive operational excellence across the full BTP service landscape.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Ownership & Platform Governance
- Own end-to-end operational accountability for all BTP services across all landscapes within the FedRAMP-authorized landscape.
- Serve as the lead service owner for the entire BTP portfolio — the single point of accountability for service availability, integrity, performance, and compliance.
- Maintain a comprehensive, current understanding of all provisioned BTP services, subaccounts, directories, entitlements, and global account configurations.
- Define and enforce operational standards, configuration baselines, change control procedures, and governance policies aligned to federal security requirements.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for all platform incidents, conducting root cause analysis, coordinating remediation, and driving permanent corrective actions.
Service Availability & Operational Continuity
- Own and manage service availability SLAs across all BTP-hosted services, proactively identifying risks and implementing mitigations before business impact occurs.
- Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability frameworks covering all BTP services — including uptime, performance, integration throughput, and error rate tracking using approved tooling within the federal environment.
- Develop, maintain, and regularly test business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) runbooks for all critical BTP services.
- Lead incident response for platform-level outages or degradations — coordinating triage, communication, and resolution across internal teams and SAP support.
Upgrades, Patching & Lifecycle Management
- Own the upgrade and patch lifecycle for all BTP services and products — planning, coordinating, testing, and executing upgrades in alignment with SAP release schedules and federal change control requirements.
- Coordinate with SAP to validate the applicability of patches and updates within the FedRAMP-authorized environment, ensuring no unauthorized components are introduced.
- Manage pre-production validation and regression testing processes for all upgrades prior to production deployment.
- Proactively monitor SAP Security Patch Day advisories and BTP release notes — assessing and prioritizing remediation actions based on risk and compliance obligations.
Platform Extensions Operations
- Operate and maintain all deployed platform extensions — ensuring they remain available, secure, and aligned with the approved configuration baseline.
- Manage the operational lifecycle of extensions including configuration updates, access control reviews, monitoring, and compliance validations.
- Coordinate with owning teams for extension changes, ensuring all modifications follow change management processes and receive appropriate security review.
- Monitor extension performance and availability, escalating anomalies and coordinating resolution to minimize disruption to business processes.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Leadership
- Act as the internal platform subject matter expert and operational authority — writing runbooks, maintaining operational documentation, and enabling other teams on platform capabilities and constraints.
- Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Security (ISSO), Compliance, and Business teams to ensure platform operations align with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Represent the platform in change advisory boards (CAB), incident review processes, and operational governance forums.
- Provide regular operational status reporting to leadership including service health, open risks, upcoming upgrades, and compliance posture.
- Mentor and guide junior platform engineers in platform operations, federal compliance requirements, and operational best practices.
- Operate in a security-first mindset, performing all responsibilities with security, availability, and compliance in mind.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Deep hands-on expertise operating SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) across multiple service categories and environments or relevant large scale enterprise SaaS platforms.
- Experience managing and operating highly scalable Enterprise scale, multi-tenant, micro-service based services.
- Experience with Cloud Foundry based architectures and Kubernetes fundamentals.
- Thorough understanding of BTP security and identity management: XSUAA, Identity Authentication Service (IAS), Role Collections, trust configuration, and access reviews.
- Experience with ITSM processes: incident management, change management (CAB/RFC), and problem management in an enterprise environment (e.g., ServiceNow).
- Familiarity with approved federal observability and monitoring tooling.
- Working knowledge of identity federation, OAuth 2.0, SAML, and zero-trust access principles within a federal secure environment.
- Understanding of cloud-native service operations including API governance, event-driven architectures, and service dependency management.
- Investigation and troubleshooting skills to review and diagnose complex platform configurations and integration failures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a track record of producing clear operational documentation, runbooks, and status reports.
- This role requires On-Call Rotation for Production services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on operational experience with SAP BTP across multiple service categories and environments or similar large scale enterprise platform experience.
- Demonstrated experience operating within a FedRAMP-authorized or equivalent federally secured cloud environment.
- Experience managing platform security posture including identity management, access controls, and compliance documentation.
- Experience with ITSM and change management processes in an enterprise environment.
- Proven track record of service ownership with documented SLA accountability and incident management responsibilities.
- Basic understanding of cloud networking: API routing, service endpoints, encryption-in-transit, and cloud connectivity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- SAP BTP certifications (e.g., SAP Certified Associate — SAP BTP, SAP Integration Suite).
- Prior formal experience in a service owner or platform lead role or similar comparable role.
- Systematic problem-solving approach with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
- Experience working in regulated or national security environments with strict compliance obligations.
