What you’ll do

Position Title: SAP iXp Intern - Cloud Database Engine Developer

Location: Waterloo, ON

Expected start date to end date: September 02, 2025 - December 19, 2025
Work hours: 40 hours per week desired

• contribute to the design of new database/query processing features
• implement prototypes using a variety of languages and tools
• write automated tests for your features
• learn about cutting edge data structures and algorithms
• build strong skills in database and cloud technologies
• be mentored by skilled researchers and developers who want to help you succeed

The following qualifications are required:

• Strong programming skills in Python
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Overall average of at least 85%
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively

The following are not required but would be valuable:

• Programming skills in C++, Go, or Scala
• Experience with Apache Parquet or Apache Spark
• Knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts
• Work experience at a software development company
• Software design experience
• Significant hobby programming
• Strong results in math or programming contests

Meet your team

Look under the hood of almost any software project and you’ll find a database. Come join our HANA Cloud Data Landscape team and learn about databases from the inside out. We are responsible for developing cloud focused database and data analytics functionality that underlies many SAP products. Our team consists primarily of masters or PhD level database researchers and software developers, and we are focused on pushing the boundaries of technology to deliver innovative solutions to our customers. We have a special passion for mentoring students, sharing our knowledge with them and helping them develop new skills.

We are looking for enthusiastic students to implement several prototypes designed to improve cloud performance in SAP HANA. You will learn about high performance data structures and algorithms, implement them, and evaluate their performance. Possible work areas include optimal use of (cloud-based) object storage, investigating approaches to querying flat file storage, and enhancing the Spark engine with new features to improve query performance. If you’re excited about writing lots of code and love the challenge of achieving the best possible performance in your software, then this could be the job for you.

Depending on your project you may use a variety of languages and tools. We expect Python to be a key development language, but you may also use Scala, Go or other languages. Knowledge of SQL, relational database concepts, Apache Spark, or Apache Parquet would be an asset but is not required.

SAP provides the hourly base salary rate range applicable for the posted role. The targeted range for this position is 18.00 - 36.00 CAD. The actual amount to be offered to the successful candidates will be within that range, dependent upon the key aspects of each case which may include education, skills, experience, scope of the role, location, etc. as determined through the selection process.
