Job Description
We help the world run better
At SAP, we enable you to bring out your best. Our company culture is focused on collaboration and a shared passion to help the world run better. How? We focus every day on building the foundation for tomorrow and creating a workplace that embraces differences, values flexibility, and is aligned to our purpose-driven and future-focused work. We offer a highly collaborative, caring team environment with a strong focus on learning and development, recognition for your individual contributions, and a variety of benefit options for you to choose from.
The Role
As a Principal Security Data Platform Engineer at SAP, you will play a crucial role in the development, maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting of our Data Platform tools within the SAP global logging and monitoring ecosystem. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure on which our global Detection Platform operates, collaborating with key stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure successful implementation. You will act as a point of escalation during outages and as a mentor to Operations staff. Your contributions will support data hygiene and quality and align with the data strategy of the Data Platform. Primary responsibilities include constructing new capabilities, enhancing existing mechanisms, and thoroughly documenting systems for future colleagues.
About Us
The Data Platform Engineering Design Team at SAP builds the Splunk (SaaS and on-premise) platform, utilized by partner organizations for Incident Response, Cyber Threat Intelligence, and Attack Surface Reduction (Vulnerability Management) across SAP lines-of-business. Security tools across the company send their telemetry to our platform for correlation, analysis, and threat detection. Our platform serves as an investigative tool for numerous Incident Responders within our centralized security function (Cyber Defense & Design) and SAP lines-of-business, providing a deeper understanding of their operating environments. Additionally, the platform supports IT Operations workloads for proactive monitoring and compliance.
What You Bring
- Proficiency with data tools such as Splunk, Cribl, and ELK, and familiarity with standard data formats or protocols like JSON, CSV, and syslog. Experience with regex/transforms/grok rules is a plus.
- Strong understanding of major protocols (HTTP, TCP, UDP, etc.), and ability to explain and differentiate them (e.g., TCP vs UDP, HTTP request/response).
- Linux administration skills, including familiarity with bash and GNU CLI tools (grep, tail, sed, etc.) and subsystems like systemd. Ability to explain Linux concepts, such as filesystems, kernel tuning, /proc, boot process, etc. Knowledge of eBPF and modern Linux concepts is a bonus.
- Comfort with GitHub VCS fundamentals and CI/CD integrations (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.).
- Experience with container and job systems like K8s, Nomad, ECS, and understanding of container primitives on Linux.
- Familiarity with enterprise authentication and authorization systems and protocols (SAML/LDAP/OIDC or similar).
- Strong network design and troubleshooting skills, including DNS.
- Knowledge of large-scale configuration management using tools like Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or Satellite, with experience managing via APIs.
- Experience with AWS management, particularly EC2, Route53, Lambda, VPC, and S3.
Nice to Have
- Understanding of high-performance ETL/Data pipeline implementation and performance implications of various tools or protocols (Kafka, AMQP, Redis, Spark, MapReduce, etc.).
- Experience developing full-stack web applications using modern technologies (React, HTMX, etc.).
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools for cloud-based workloads, such as Grafana or Prometheus.
- Experience building production systems on AWS, including managing EC2, SSM, AMI builders like Packer, and OS authentication/authorization.
