Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Tech Engineering Manager to join and lead our internal Digital Development team reporting into the Head of Technology Services here at the RSPB. The team of 10 consisting of Seniors, Middleweight and Junior Developers work across a broad range of Products including the RSPB Website, Merlin (our Conservation application) plus E Commerce and SharePoint.

What's the role about??

The Technology Engineering Manager role is aimed at someone with a broad experience of Development Architecture, best practice around Agile and Dev Ops who can lead, inspire, and ensure we upskill our internal development team. For some areas of work, we co-source with experts in products and so ensuring there are common standards for code, and you have experience of working with third parties is also key. Currently we have several big projects the team are working on, including the platform migration of our website, so you would have an active role on that project as the Technical Lead for the Development stream, attendance at stand ups, Steering Groups and being part of the wider Digital leadership team are all part of the role.

Essential skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Proven experience of leading a group of Developers on complex projects using agile principles.
  • Working knowledge of the following to allow ability to lead on Angular, React, Node, NPM, C#, PWA, APIs, OAuth2, OpenID Connect, Docker, GitHub Actions, Azure, Jira.
  • Ability to produce clear written communications.
  • Great interpersonal skills whether 1-2-1, chairing a meeting or presenting to a large audience.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrable leadership ability, able to lead without line management authority.
  • Logical, methodical, analytical and with a good eye for detail.
  • An ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of people, both internally and externally.

Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of working with external stakeholders such as agencies and contractors
  • Magnolia CMS, SharePoint, SPFx, Identity Server
  • Static site rendering, CDNs, Azure DevOps
  • Kubernetes, Java
  • DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines
