Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join RSPB Cymru and manage our Biosecurity for Wales Project to implement measures to ensure Welsh seabird islands are free of non-native invasive mammalian predators. The project will also seek to secure long-term solutions and commitments to maintain this important work after the project ends. This project will build on the successful Biosecurity for Life Project. Biosecurity for Wales is funded by the Nature Networks Programme, which is being delivered by the Heritage Fund on behalf of the Welsh Government.

What’s the role about:

As Project Manager, you will be responsible for putting in place the right governance structure to keep the project on track and to ensure adherence to strategic priorities. Relationship building will be central to this role: you will lead on internal communications and be responsible for developing an external partnership biosecurity programme. You will work closely with colleagues to develop and implement appropriate advocacy and communications plans and act as a spokesperson on the project. As line manager for the Biosecurity Officer, you will oversee the delivery of public engagement and biosecurity training and biosecurity surveillance on offshore seabird islands. In addition to project management, experience in influencing policy makers and fieldwork will be advantageous.

In managing the project, you will:

  • Organise work into a manageable set of activities, with key milestones, and be responsible for managing the project budget against forecast.
  • Take responsibility for overall progress and use of resources and initiate corrective action where required, to keep the project on track.
  • Produce relevant project management documentation (including highlight reports).
  • Direct and motivate the Biosecurity Officer and wider project team to achieve project success.
  • Manage the dependencies between the project and other related UK Biosecurity projects.
  • You will also be responsible for the following outputs:
  • Work with external delivery partners to ensure joined-up development and implementation of the Welsh seabird island biosecurity partnership.
  • Regular communication and advocacy with decision makers, including the Welsh Government and statutory agencies, to ensure effective engagement with the project and its partnership
  • Working with partners to establish mechanisms to implement the biosecurity partnership programme after the project ends.
  • Manage handover to ‘business as usual’ by formally bringing the project to an end, preparation of any follow-on actions required and communicate to others where relevant.

Essentials:

  • Demonstrable ability to manage changes within projects.
  • Experience of working to a standard project management approach (e.g. RSPB Project Management Framework, Prince II).
  • Cost and budget management.
  • Experience of leading and managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrable leadership ability, able to lead without line management authority.
  • An ability to persuade and influence a wide range of people internally and externally.
  • An understanding of the role of public facing communications/campaigns in supporting conservation delivery.
  • An ability to produce clear written communications.
  • Good knowledge of UK/EU/international nature conservation.
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or significant experience relevant to the role.

Desirables:

  • Demonstrable experience of developing and working in partnerships to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Practical knowledge of translating conservation evidence and policy into practical techniques for conservation action and/or into public policy solutions.
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh – spoken and written. ]
