Introduction
This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to join our team within the North Wales Moors and support the delivery of our ambitious programme of peatland restoration. We are looking for an individual with experience of delivering habitat restoration with the ambition, drive and skills to join a team already setting the standard for peatland restoration with Wales. This is an opportunity to work in some of Wales’s most iconic landscapes, driving RSPB’s ambitious vision for our uplands.
This programme of work will take place in partnership with Natural Resources Wales and the National Trust and their tenants in the Ysbyty Ifan estate within the Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt SAC/SPA. The landscape is a predominantly farmed landscape comprised of upland habitats (blanket bog and dry heath), ffridd, and farmland which includes rough grassland.
What's the role about?
The Assistant Conservation Officer will be a key member of the North Wales Moors Team. Responsibilities will include:
- Undertake the delivery of species and habitat specific capital works by deploying the appropriate conservation tools, as directed by the line manager to ensure effective and efficient.
- Build positive relationships with key external partners and stakeholders so that RSPB’s policies and messages are understood and furthered within relevant partnerships and fora.
- Planning and organising habitat management works, ensuring all permissions and consents are in place, managing contractors and ensuring works are completed within the specified timeframe and budget.
- Working in partnership with local partners and the local community to champion high quality peatland restoration for multiple benefits.
- Reporting results and progress to partners, funders and other stakeholders.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- You will be able to develop strong working relationships with farmers, provide advice and support;
- You will have a good understanding of species and habitats of the area including measures required to protect and restore these.
- You will work as part of a local conservation team in Wales and be part of the wider Wales peatland community. Teamwork and communication skills are essential.
- You'll be experienced to walk and navigate in remote and rugged environments;
- You will have a full driving licence or have ability to access remote locations
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:
- Competency in GIS.
- Experience of productive partnership working.
- Experience of working to survey, protect and/or manage important sites, species or habitats.
- Experience of managing and delivering habitat management contracts;
- Ability to communicate in Welsh;
This is a 14 month Contract until December 2024, 0.6 Part Time role for 22.5 hours per week.
The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
