Job Description

Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.

Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

What to expect:

We're looking to hire our first Technician dedicated to supporting our Quantum Processor Engineering (QPE) team to support the fabrication and evaluation of our Quantum Processors. This is a hands-on role within a rapidly growing team and a chance to add real value to the function moving forward. You will collaborate with our manufacturing team and in-house IC fabrication engineers to inspect and prepare ion-traps for assembly, as well as working with our evaluation team to conduct experiments on new assemblies and materials to assess their performance at cryogenic temperatures.

This be a broad and varied role where everyday will look different. It is a great chance for someone to expand their skillset and continue their professional development with support and guidance from the QPE team.

What you'll be responsible for:

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting lab work that encompasses stock management, testing, inspection, and general lab upkeep. This will include working both in the laboratory and in our cleanroom. You will be responsible for assisting the team with reporting and with documentation of inspection and test results. This aspect of the role will include cleaning and preparing ion-trap chips ready for packaging and assembly. Other tasks may also include; die bonding, wire-bonding, packaging and assembly of test chips.

Our processors operate in a vacuum at cryogenic temperatures and the QPE team must understand the performance of these conditions. Under supervision, you will be responsible for maintaining cryogenic vacuum chambers and related controls and conducting set test routines for checking electrical and mechanical properties of devices.

Requirements

This role will be best suited to someone who has worked in a scientific environment previously and has strong experience in soldering (specifically 0402 SMD components) and electrical and electronic testing. Diverse experience working in a practical role supporting scientific, laboratory or engineering work is essential. You will be familiar with basic electronics and standard electronic hardware evolution.

Ideally you will have worked as a laboratory technician (or similar) and will be familiar with standard lab techniques and behaviours. Experience working within a cleanroom environment would be beneficial but not essential.

Given the varied nature of the role, you should be able to effectively manage your time between multiple evaluation tasks across several disciplines and have a self-motivated and detail-oriented approach to your work. You should also be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc.) with some familiarity of Google Workspace tools (Docs, Sheets, Slides etc.). Above all, we expect you to have a passion and drive for learning.

Additional desirable experience could include:

  • Experience running basic electrical measurements.
  • Experience running visual inspection routines on dies.
  • A track record of working in cleanrooms or environments where electrical and chemical safety is important.
  • Familiarity with CAD, mechanical engineering, vacuum chambers or cryogenic systems, or electronic system maintenance (test rigs).

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.
