Job Description

Software Licensing Specialist

  • Act as the organisation’s senior licensing expert, advising leadership and owning NFU Mutual’s defence against major software audits.

  • Shape multimillion pound commercial and transformation decisions, optimising licensing for cloud, datacentre and major vendor contracts.

  • Hybrid – Up to 80% homeworking available and 20% in Stratford-upon-Avon.

About the role

Join us as our Software Licensing Specialist and help shape the future of NFU Mutual’s software strategy.

We’re looking for an exceptional Software Licensing Specialist to play a pivotal role in reducing licensing cost and risk across NFU Mutual’s technology estate. This is a rare opportunity to become the organisation’s senior licensing authority, shaping governance, influencing multimillion pound decisions, and safeguarding NFU Mutual during audits and major technology transformations.

As part of our Vendor Management team, you’ll provide expert insight on complex licensing models across IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Azure and more. You’ll work closely with senior leaders, procurement, legal and technical teams to ensure we purchase, deploy and manage software in the most cost effective and compliant way possible.

In this high impact role, you will act as NFU Mutual’s senior licensing expert—producing specialised analytical reports, interpreting complex technical data, and advising stakeholders up to CIO level to optimise renewals, defend against audit exposure, and reduce overall licensing costs. You’ll lead fact based responses and negotiations during formal software audits, ensure major change programmes (including datacentre migration and cloud initiatives) are correctly licensed, and help run software governance boards to set effective controls that manage cost and risk.

You’ll maintain expert level knowledge of licensing standards and metrics across on premise, SaaS, Azure and AWS, and drive “rightsizing” initiatives that align usage, forecasts and contractual commitments to deliver significant savings. Working with internal and external technical teams, you’ll specify requirements and extract complex relational data to build accurate Effective Licence Position (ELP) reports. You’ll also provide critical input to vendor management, procurement and legal colleagues on deals impacting £50m+ annual spend, and, where needed, guide or lead analysts and vendor management staff to deliver high quality licensing outcomes.

About you

Strong analytical ability, effective collaboration, and confident stakeholder engagement to C-suite skills are essential for this role. You’ll work closely with colleagues across multiple functions, using data driven insight to influence decisions and shape outcomes. Success requires the ability to communicate complex licensing issues and recommendations, build trusted relationships, and effectively influence to drive progress and achieve shared goals.

Essential experience:

  • Extensive experience as a senior licensing specialist within Vendor Management.

  • Expert level licensing knowledge across IBM, Microsoft and Oracle product families, including detailed terms, conditions and entitlements.

  • Proven track record as principal contact for major software audits, including complex/hostile scenarios.

  • Strong technical understanding of desktop and datacentre licensing metrics.

  • Significant hands on experience supporting largescale change programmes, especially datacentre to cloud migration.

  • Advanced commercial negotiation and audit defence experience.

  • Deep understanding of SAM tooling and processes, including data extraction and analysis.

At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.

We recognise that some candidates may experience barriers during the recruitment process. So, we encourage candidates to discuss any adjustments or accommodations they need to be the best they can be throughout our recruitment process.
