About the role

NFU Mutual’s Head Office Underwriting Department are pleased to share the opportunity for an experienced professional to join them as a Property & Casualty Underwriter.

This role can be offered as either a permanent position, or a fixed term contract for 12 months, depending on candidate preference.

You will recommend and develop our underwriting strategy for our Property & Casualty Insurance offering, establishing appropriate rules, terms and risk features that will enable the delivery of profit and growth objectives whilst effectively managing insurance risk in line with the overall underwriting strategy.

You will engage in portfolio analysis and account performance management, working closely with key stakeholders to help set the parameters for growth targets and define the organisation’s risk appetite. The role also involves translating underwriting appetite into practical rules, processes and communications for NFU Mutual Agents and Underwriters, enabling the effective execution of risk appetite and optimising sales channel performance.

In addition, you will review and provide expert judgement on risk rates to ensure that rates and rating logic are informed by deep insurance and market knowledge, as well as collate and analyse management information to identify opportunities to improve underwriting strategy

You will ultimately play an instrumental role in ensuring the business is well positioned to meet both current and new business requirements.

This role is known internally as: Class Underwriter - Line of Business.

About you

We are seeking an experienced insurance professional with a strong background in Property and/or Casualty (P&C) Underwriting, who will bring a strategic mindset and deep understanding of the P&C insurance market, alongside strong technical capability and sound underwriting judgement. You will be an effective communicator, able to adapt your communication style to suit both technical and nontechnical audiences and be able to build and maintain impactful working relationships across the business.

You will also be proactive and comfortable working under your own initiative, with the ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will also demonstrate strong strategic thinking and experience leading key pieces of work, including delivering initiatives from concept through to completion.

A high level of data literacy is essential, with the ability to translate data and management information into clear, actionable insights that support underwriting strategy and business objectives. An ACII qualification would be advantageous but is not essential for the role.

At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.

We recognise that some candidates may experience barriers during the recruitment process. So, we encourage candidates to discuss any adjustments or accommodations they need to be the best they can be throughout our recruitment process.
