Job Description

Location/s: Glasgow, Manchester, London, Croydon; UK
Recruiter contact: Alice Roostan

Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management, and development consultancy with over 20,000 employees across more than 50 countries and 140+ offices.

We work across incredible global industries, delivering exciting work that is defining our future and making an important societal impact in the communities we serve. Our people power our performance – we succeed when they do. With countless opportunities to collaborate, learn, and grow, the possibilities for excellence are as varied as every individual.

Whether you want to grow as a subject matter expert or broaden your experience with roles across our international community, you’re surrounded by global specialists who want to combine their expertise and champion you to be your best. As a proudly employee-owned business, we benefit our clients, our communities, and each other, investing in creating the right space for everyone to feel empowered, included, and valued. Whatever your ambition, Mott MacDonald is where people come to be brilliant.

About the business unit
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of the role

Due to continued growth, the Systems Engineering and Assurance team are recruiting a Systems Engineer / Safety Engineer to join a friendly and dynamic team focussed on delivering systems engineering and/or safety assurance solutions to infrastructure, energy and technology projects.

Some of the key services provided by the team include:

  • Engineering Safety Management
  • Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM)
  • Requirements Management
  • System Architecture Development
  • Interface Management and Systems Integration
  • Design Assurance
  • Verification and Validation

The Systems / Safety Engineer will work alongside experienced professionals within multidisciplinary teams and gain experience using industry standard toolsets across a diverse range of projects.

In addition to project delivery activities, the successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to bids and proposals and participate in the Early Careers Professionals (ECP) network.

We are working on a wide variety of UK rail projects from level crossing removals and station upgrades to the largest national railway infrastructure developments. We also provide support to international projects in countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States to name but a few.

As infrastructure projects increase in complexity, there is an ever-increasing need for the application of our services across a wider range of industries, including transportation, energy and power so we also welcome applications from individuals outside the railways industry to support the growing demand for our services.

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • We are seeking adaptable and motivated individuals who can work effectively both independently and collaboratively. Strong relationship-building skills and effective verbal and written communication in English are essential for working with colleagues and clients
  • A strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving
  • Candidates should be able to apply their academic and professional experience to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines
  • A degree in an engineering, mathematical or science related discipline, together with an understanding of Systems Engineering and / or Safety Engineering, the V-Model and associated processes/lifecycles along with experience in one or more of the key service areas provided by our team
  • Member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET, IMechE, IfSE, INCOSE) and working towards professional registration as a Chartered Engineer

Desirable:

  • Desirable experience includes applying CSM-RA, NTSNs and EN 50126/28/29 alongside producing safety documentation, participating in HAZID workshops and managing safety requirements.

UK Immigration

Mott MacDonald Ltd. are not currently offering sponsorship to candidates under the Skilled Worker visa route in the UK. This decision is as a consequence of the changes made to the Skilled Worker route by the UK Government in April 2024. We continue to welcome applications from candidates who are eligible for alternative immigration routes in the UK, that do not require sponsorship as a Skilled Worker now or in future.

We encourage individual expression in our workplace and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels they can contribute.

At Mott MacDonald, we see the value AI can bring, but we take a people-first approach to hiring. While AI tools can help candidates prepare and build confidence, every application and hiring decision is reviewed by our recruitment and hiring teams. We encourage the responsible use of AI while ensuring we get to know the real person behind the application.
