Mott MacDonald is a leading provider of engineering, advisory, program management, and technical consulting services supporting electric utility infrastructure throughout North America.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer to provide technical leadership across transmission, substation, protection & controls, and power system infrastructure projects. This role is ideally suited to an experienced engineer with deep expertise in electrical utility systems and a proven track record delivering complex utility infrastructure projects for investor-owned utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, renewable developers, and industrial clients.

The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical leader responsible for guiding engineering teams, ensuring technical excellence, mentoring developing engineers, and supporting the successful delivery of utility infrastructure programs that improve grid reliability, resiliency, renewable integration, and system performance.

This role is best suited for an engineer who combines deep technical expertise with strong collaboration, client-facing capabilities, and a passion for developing both people and engineering solutions that support the evolving electric utility sector.

Your Impact

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will provide technical leadership on some of the Southwest’s and North America's most critical utility infrastructure projects.

You will help shape engineering solutions, mentor technical professionals, support multidisciplinary project teams, and contribute to the continued growth of Mott MacDonald's Energy practice.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a senior technical lead for transmission, substation, power systems, and/or utility infrastructure projects and serve as Subject Matter Expert in one or more Utility disciplines.
  • Provide engineering leadership throughout planning, studies, conceptual design, detailed design, procurement support, construction support, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
  • Establish technical approaches, engineering methodologies, and design strategies for complex utility infrastructure projects.

Quality Assurance

  • Review and seal design packages to ensure compliance with client and industry standards and Mott MacDonald QA/QC procedures.
  • Review, seal, and approve engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, studies, drawings, and design documentation.
  • Support development and implementation of engineering standards, best practices, quality processes, and technical guidance across the business.

Project Delivery Support

  • Partner closely with Project Managers and discipline leads to support successful project execution.
  • Support development of project execution plans, engineering schedules, staffing plans, and technical delivery strategies.
  • Coordinate technical disciplines and engineering resources to meet project objectives.
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support construction activities, site inspections, commissioning efforts, startup support, and technical issue resolution.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet scope, schedule, quality, and client expectations

Business Development & Technical Growth

  • Support strategic pursuits, proposals, interviews, and technical presentations.
  • Develop technical approaches, engineering execution plans, and discipline estimates for major opportunities.

Technical Mentorship & Capability Development

  • Mentor engineers, designers, and technical specialists.
  • Support technical training, onboarding, and professional development initiatives.
  • Participate in recruitment and development of future engineering talent.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, innovation initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, safety, and client service.
  • Help strengthen Mott MacDonald's technical capabilities across Power Systems, Protection & Controls, and Utility Infrastructure disciplines.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required in one or more southwest states.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical utility, power systems, transmission, distribution, substation, and/or energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience delivering projects for electric utilities, municipalities, independent power producers, renewable energy clients, or industrial facilities.
  • Strong understanding of transmission and distribution systems, substation design, utility protection schemes, power system studies, and applicable industry standards.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership within multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in either Protection & Control Engineering or Substation Engineering design for utility applications.
  • Demonstrated expertise in transmission line design.
  • Experience supporting investor-owned utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, renewable developers, independent power producers, or industrial clients.
  • Experience with industry software such as PLS Systems, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, ASPEN, SEL, or equivalent engineering tools.
  • Knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, FERC, NERC, RUS, utility standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Established relationships within the utility sector.
  • Experience supporting owner's engineering assignments, program delivery contracts, or large utility capital investment programs

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.

The expected salary for this position is $139,000 - $170,000.
