As the California Building MEP Discipline Leader you are responsible for management and leadership of the building MEP business function of all staff within the discipline in Mott MacDonald California.

You will support unit general managers to manage their unit with respect to recruitment and resourcing, promotions and salary reviews, and day-to-day line management of staff including training approvals and leave authorizations. You will manage the development of staff within the discipline, including approval of individual development plans and training plans for each staff member within your discipline.

You will be responsible for working alongside leadership to develop opportunities, lead pursuits, grow the team and oversee the delivery of the technical work.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 15 years of professional experience in the sector providing consulting services in the transportation-built environment, notably vertical structures such as stations, Depots, OMF facilities and Logistic hubs. Experience in delivering California projects is preferred.

As a project technical lead you will manage delivery of project work, supervising and directing the work of others within the project team to deliver high quality technical work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the growth of the MEP business within the Building Services team within California

  • Developing the pipeline of opportunities within the Los Angeles area

  • Leading multi disciplinary proposals on transit and built environment projects

  • Manage the regional building MEP discipline business function, managing staff and projects within the discipline, and driving integration and collaboration across geographical and organizational boundaries

  • Implement the building MEP discipline plan, monitor performance and meet the annual budget, make recruitment, resourcing, salary and promotion decisions for staff within the discipline

  • Be a figurehead for the building MEP discipline regionally and globally, and create a regional network that provides joined up leadership for the building MEP discipline

  • Manage skills, capabilities and competencies of staff within the building MEP discipline and manage the implementation of development and training plans for individual staff

  • Maintain strong engagement with Units and Divisions and report on the progress of the building MEP discipline through agreed building MEP discipline metrics

  • Plan for succession and appoint deputies and technical leaders as required

  • Appoint individuals from the Early Career Professional community to support the building MEP discipline in meeting the Discipline objectives

  • Understand the external regional market related to the building MEP discipline and ensure the building MEP discipline is engaged in external engagement activity that will develop new work and revenue streams, and maintain an excellent regional and global reputation

  • Manage targeted client relationships to grow the business and identify the technical resources needed to pursue, win and deliver projects.

Candidates who can demonstrate the following skills and experience will be considered for the role:

  • BEng & MSc in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or Building Services.

  • Experience in design management and MEP Engineering Design of Transportation stations, Depots, OMF facilities and Logistics Buildings is a requirement

  • 15+ years of relevant experience with both public and private sector clients

  • PE in California is required

  • Will be experienced in the design and construction of innovative and technically challenging buildings

  • Experience of delivering Net-Zero Design required

  • Will have exemplary client management skills and will be able to easily maintain relationships while simultaneously growing the business and winning new work and clients.

  • Extremely commercially aware.

  • Have an existing network of contacts for potential projects.

  • Proven record of bidding and winning work.

  • Experience of managing teams of M&E Engineers and acting as project director for major projects.

  • Work with other directors to shape the future of the business and develop effective strategies to further grow the business unit.

  • ILFI, LEED, WELL, or Envision accreditation preferred
