Job Description

We are to recruit an enthusiastic, imaginative and committed person to join our growing, world-class rail business as a Track (Permanent Way) Engineer. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your career while helping shape our emerging track team in India. Working in a supportive and multi-disciplined environment, you’ll contribute to exciting projects delivering high-quality work for clients in the UK and Ireland such as East West Rail, Northern Powerhouse Rail, Network Rail, Irish Rail and many others.

We are looking for an experienced Track (Permanent Way) Engineer with a minimum of 3+ years of relevant track design experience.

You should have excellent knowledge, understanding and experience of:

  • Plain line and S&C design.

  • Gauging principles.

  • Track materials and componentry.

It would be advantageous to have knowledge, understanding and experience of:

  • Track drainage.

  • 3D modelling of track designs.

  • UK health and safety requirements, standards and design acceptance and assurance in relation to construction and railways.

  • Surveying techniques in a railway environment.

You will also promote Mott MacDonald’s health, safety, and well‑being policies, and support the delivery of design outputs that meet the quality standards and requirements set out in our Business Management System (BMS).

Key Responsibilities:

Your primary responsibility will be to undertake the track design elements of a project working under a track design lead and project management team. The projects will largely be multi-disciplinary in nature and vary throughout the project lifecycle.

The role is varied and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Inputting into all stages of track projects from conception through to completion, ensuring client specifications, budgets, and timelines are met.

  • Providing technical excellence in track design, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.

  • Working towards becoming a technical expert, pioneering the development and application of advanced engineering concepts and strategies to address unique challenges.

  • Seeking innovative solutions in the design and implementation of various projects.

  • Preserving the team's culture and fostering a positive working environment.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives to develop design solutions that meet client requirements, regulatory standards and comply with industry standards and safety regulations.

  • Ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with Mott MacDonald's quality standard procedures.

  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and new technologies.

  • Contributing to the successful performance of the existing Track team around the UK and Ireland.

  • Providing technical guidance for graduates and/or apprentices.

Candidate Specification

We are looking for a flexible and motivated professional with a genuine passion and a desire to make a difference in the world.

Academic, professional qualifications and experience:

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering.

  • Ideally a professional member of a relevant institution (e.g. chartered or incorporated engineer with RailEI, IET, IMechE, ICE or INCOSE).

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Highly proficient at track alignment design.

  • Focus on safety and safe by design.

  • Proficient with OpenRail and MicroStation packages.

  • Familiarity with BIM and common data environment platforms such as Bentley ProjectWise.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective time management and strong organisational skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills supporting collaborative working with colleagues.

  • Problem-solving attitude with a high level of responsibility for assigned tasks and projects.

  • Professional and respectful approach towards others.

Desirable Competencies / Skills:

  • Demonstrate rounded track design experience covering a wide range of interfaces, e.g. formation design, interface with structures, stressing design, drainage design etc

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Railway Group Standards and UK Company Specific Standards, e.g Network Rail/LUL including Project assurance requirements

  • Experience in liaising with clients, co-professionals, and design teams.

  • Experience in delivery within time and cost constraints.

  • Experience of working with UK railways clients such as Network Rail.

  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of a recognised professional institution would be an advantage.

  • Able to scope and manage gauging survey and analysis from ClearRoute (or D/Gauge Rift).

  • Proficient with Autodesk products including AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
