Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of role

Within the Rail Division, the Traction Power & EMC Team (TPO) undertakes projects of various sizes, many of which are multi-disciplinary. Due to a colleague transferring to another part of the business and a restructuring of TPO, we have an open vacancy for a Traction Power Team Leader (Croydon). This is a part-time job role and the successful candidate will be expected to do billable work for the majority of the time. The aspiration is for the successful candidate to be based in our Croydon office. However, candidates not based at this location may be considered and, if interviewed, will be asked to demonstrate how they propose to manage an essentially Croydon-based team given their present location. Depending on project requirements, there may also be a need to travel to other locations (company / client offices or sites) within the UK and overseas.

This is a key role within TPO, calling for an experienced individual with a background in electrical engineering, ideally in traction power and/or electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), with an ability to manage people, demonstrate leadership and grow the business. The responsibilities are twofold: team management and project (billable) work. The expectation is for the successful candidate to work the majority of their time on billable projects.

1. Team Management
You will be responsible for the management of a team of engineers. This will involve day-to-day management of people taking responsibility for their welfare, mentoring, career development and utilisation. You will also be responsible for ensuring strict compliance of your team with Mott MacDonald’s BMS requirements, support the Head of Discipline in achieving the team’s productivity and utilisation targets and compliance with Mott MacDonald’s procedures, and help foster Mott MacDonald’s office-based culture.

The successful candidate will report to the Traction Power Head of Discipline and will work with them to manage utilisation, provide the best people for specific roles on projects and bids, and support our recruitment needs.

The successful candidate will also work with the Head of Discipline to promote their team both inside and outside Mott MacDonald, developing working relationships with Mott MacDonald electrical engineering teams within other divisions and contribute to the business development effort while adhering to business development budget limits.

2. Project Work
Well-established in the UK rail industry and respected by your peers, you will be responsible for providing technical input and delivering technical scopes to budget and programme on DC and AC traction power systems (inc. stray current and earthing & bonding, etc.) and/or EMC. A seasoned engineer, the candidate will work as Contractor Responsible Engineer (or equivalent level), Contractor Engineering Manager and/or Design Manager in the above subject matter areas and supervise more junior staff as appropriate.

  • First Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent;
  • Good working knowledge and demonstrable experience in AC and DC electrification systems;
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution;
