About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.
Our Power, Process & Nuclear are looking for a Senior Planner to lead our planning team on a major UK programme of work. This long-term and complex project promises to be motivating and challenging. It presents an excellent opportunity for the right person to become a central element of our team and an integral part of successful project delivery.
About the role:
- Able to manage a portfolio (typically <£10M per annum) of schedules, to fully understand the interactions between them & to explain the output to stakeholders at all levels. Can develop planning strategy within the portfolio and able to provide mentoring to lower planning grades.
- Ability to ‘police’ a small portfolio, to ensure all schedules adhere to procedures and local practices / work instructions & that these are consistently applied.
- Fully understands EV principles, able to explain variances within the portfolio & advise all stakeholders of potential mitigation options / recovery scenarios.
- Ability to liaise with & take direction from lead & Management roles.
- Ability to assess potential improvements to the structure of the schedule (including hierarchal coding) & to discuss and agree implementation measures with peers & key stakeholders.
- Application of change control measures (ideally within the NEC contract model) & the ability to recognise when a change can be applied to both the baseline & working schedule.
- Self-performs schedule integrity checking across the portfolio, including re-assessment of critical path & key deliverables on each update and communication of key issues to all relevant stakeholders.
- Automatically liaises with other stakeholders regarding work to go & discussion / communication of this with the Cost Engineer, Project Manager & Project Control Manager, leading to underpinned EACs.
- Ability to develop a resourced delivery-based schedule through liaison with Project Leads / Lead Engineers. Can develop & apply rules of credit and able to justify and substantiate their application.
- Ability to baseline & progress a portfolio of resourced schedules.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and influence key individuals.
- Ability to drive the project team to deliver to plan and constructively challenge any delay or deviation.
- Collaboratively develop, maintain and present detailed project plans in 4D using Bentley Synchro software, Primavera P6 and relevant BIM models.
- Appreciate and uphold the Health & Safety standards in all planning activities.
- Ensure project plans capture the full project scope.
- Assist in the proactive identification of opportunities and risks in the plan.
- Ensure planning standards are maintained.

About you:
- Applicants will have experience in a planning role developing detailed resourced schedules & applying Earned Value (EV) Techniques working on large scale or significant value projects within the civil engineering sector.
- Experience leading a planning team to developing a portfolio of schedules, complete with the appropriate WBS & applicable coding required to manage & succinctly report the portfolio.
- The ability to communicate clearly and succinctly with all stakeholders both within the project team & up through the Organisations’ reporting structure.
- An ability to provide leadership & mentoring to lower planning grades, to formulate local processes / procedures and allocate work-share across a portfolio.
- Experience of leading collaborative planning processes and working with different teams (engineers, contractors, suppliers, equipment operators, etc.) and the client to deliver optimal programme schedules.
- Awareness of the latest technologies, procedures & innovations and how these may be applied to the benefit of the portfolio.
- The successful candidate will work from our offices with the ability to travel to our client offices.

- Confidence in presenting to and speaking to external stakeholder bodies.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
- Candidate preferred to be a member of a recognised body (i.e. APM / ACostE / Planning or Project Controls).
