About the business unit
The Buildings and Cities Unit (BNC) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Job Description:

We are looking for a Senior Highways Engineer, based in the Southwest, to help lead the delivery of sustainable infrastructure projects for a diverse range of clients around the UK. We have a portfolio of exciting and innovative Highways projects for clients including for a range of Local Authorities, National Highways, design and build schemes with major contractors, and HS2. We are looking for someone to contribute to the winning of new work and the development of our staff within the Highways sector.

You will work on a range of infrastructure projects bringing real change to our communities by providing new vital transport links and driving social value through the wider benefits of our projects.   • Delivery of National Highways’ economic growth project to provide a new junction for the Avonmouth Severnside enterprise zone
  • Newquay Strategic Route – technical assurance and quality management for Cornwall County Council
  • Bristol City Council youth zone development junction improvements and access
  • Active travel improvement schemes including providing off road cycling infrastructure along the A38 for Sustrans
  • Congestion relief for the A31/A331 junctions working for Guildford and Sussex County Council
  • Innovative projects looking at the concepts for fully autonomous zero carbon public transport allowing road space within our streets to be reallocated for community and commercial use
  • Delivering highway improvements to improve air quality in Coventry by reducing the environmental impacts of traffic congestion on air quality and local communities.

Candidate Specification:

You will be responsible for managing projects and multi-disciplinary design teams producing and assuring designs, controlling task budgets, and the development of staff competencies and career paths. You will also support our Highways Practices in business development activities and take responsibility for developing commercial and technical responses to new opportunities.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience and be professionally qualified with an appropriate engineering institution (ICE, CIHT, PWI etc) or show equivalent continuous professional development..

The successful candidate must have experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • Early stage optioneering (e.g. Business Case development)
  • Understanding of all stages of design (Feasibility Design through to Detailed Design)
  • Demonstrate experience of leading a key phase of a rapid transit / infrastructure scheme (feasibility, concept design, detailed design, construction, commissioning, operations etc.)
  • Project Management (Procurement, Requirements, Technical Assurance, Risk etc)
  • Full awareness of Health & Safety Legislation and CDM Regulations and how it is applied to the design process


The candidate will be able to demonstrate practical skills in the following areas:

  • Proven experience in project management of projects and leading teams across multi-disciplines (from bidding stage through to delivery against contracted cost and programme)
  • Excellent communication skills (good verbal, written and presentation skills) and confident in Client facing roles
  • Previous experience of working on UK public sector highways / infrastructure projects
  • Experience in highway design with competence to independently check and approve the work of others (knowledge of key design standards and guidance
  • Experience of using Digital Design Tools for production of deliverables including BIM


The following would be seen as beneficial but are not essential to the role:

  • Technical Excellence (someone experienced in coaching, mentoring and developing people & teams)
  • Previous experience of working on UK public sector rapid transit / infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge of contract preparation, procurement and risk management
  • Appreciation of the operational and maintenance impacts of our design solutions
  • Available to travel for short assignments when required to other UK offices and possibly overseas

In Exeter we have a growing team of over 30 staff working in easily accessible grade A offices. Our Southwest Infrastructure team is one team working across Bristol and Exeter offices so you will be part of a South West community of circa 400 staff.
