Job Description

We’re on a mission to save our users as much money as possible. One of our brands, MoneySavingExpert, is the UK’s biggest consumer website, with more than 16 million users a month. It is dedicated to cutting users’ costs and fighting their corner with journalistic research, pioneering tools and extensive community led features.

More than 8 million people have signed up to receive our weekly email, which is packed full of deals, loopholes and MoneySaving guides. We also continue to harness the collective power of our users to get them the best deals from providers. All of this resulted in us topping the YouGov Recommended rankings in 2021!

We're hugely proud of this, but we’re committed to making our products and services even better to help our users save even more. We’ve got big plans, but to complete this we need passionate engineers who can improve and contribute to our processes.

That’s where this role comes in. We’re looking for an experienced software engineer who can lead and support our product teams; bringing together skilled and articulate technical peers in the creation of world-class software products. Our team encompasses full-stack developers; backend developers; frontend developers; QAs and integrated UX and Product specialists.

We want you to support the team in building the best products for our users. That’s the factor that links all of our engineers – a passion for building sites that tackle real life problems.

Our ideal candidate has good communication skills, technical proficiency, and agile delivery experience. Quality engineering and developing new insights are also crucial qualities.

The role of a Principal Developer at MSMG

  • Our Principals work cross domain and cross team, aligning and defining architecture between these
  • They are calm and collected and know how to tackle problems with the team optimally
  • You'll be confident making technical decisions and can communicate them effectively. As part of this you'll demonstrate and suggest better ways of doing things
  • The primary goal is to ensure our products are efficient and scalable for years to come, ensures quality and architectural patterns are adopted within your area and the wider group
  • We'll expect you to have comprehensive coding and engineering skills, able to work across a wide range of platforms & technologies
  • You will be seen as a domain expert for technology, able to evangelise new platforms and techniques, and helping teams to take the most programmatic approach

Our technologies

We use a multitude of technologies, employed over many years to build the platforms that drive our group today. Over the past couple of years we've been moving towards serverless architectures and event-driven backends hosted in AWS and using Javascript, Typescript and other object oriented programming languages (including Java & C# .Net).

Code is kept up to date and technical debt prioritised and removed. We use Jira for ticket management, GitLab for source control and have a dedicated platform engineering team which supports a developer platform as our infrastructure estate.

We never settle, and we’re always looking for ways in which we can improve our technology estate. You can read about this in more detail here.

Why us?

Our benefits include up to 30 days holiday, a bonus, enhanced parental leave, and tools that empower our supportive culture. You can find a full list here.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform crucial job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.

We're an inclusive, anti-racist and equal opportunity employer that values diversity. This means we respect and embrace differences in gender identity, race, ethnic origin, sexual expression and orientation, religion and faith, age, marital status, disability, neurodiversity, social background, education and way of thinking. We’re a place where you can be you.

Our customers and users come from different backgrounds, as do our colleagues. We encourage applications from everyone, and particularly encourage women and Black, Asian and ethnic minority candidates to apply as we’re actively building representation that’s more closely reflective of the communities we serve. Our appointments are made on merit, following a robust and objective assessment process, and the candidate with the highest score is offered the role. If you’re passionate about our purpose of helping households save money and excited about what you could accomplish here, we’d love to hear from you.

We understand that job adverts only say so much and you’re likely to have a lot of questions. If you’d like to know anything before applying such as more on the location, salary, our parental leave policy etc, please just let us know, and we’ll be happy to help.
