Job Description

What you'll bring to the team

Are you driven by a passion for aquatic animal husbandry and people? Are you ready to lead a team that cares for some of the most fascinating marine creatures in the oldest Aquarium in the world?

As one of our Displays Supervisors at SEA LIFE Brighton, you will lead and develop a team of Aquarists, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, husbandry, conservation and display excellence. You will oversee everything from managing life support systems, ensuring our visitors are ‘wowed’ by the beauty and vibrancy of our exhibits. Plus, you'll have the chance to roll up your sleeves and dive into various conservation projects including working with the UK’s first purpose-built sea turtle rehabilitation and repatriation centre.

Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Supervising the daily operations of our displays team, including the health and safety of animals and people.
  • Managing and developing your team, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, care, and innovation are met.
  • Collaborating on animal acquisitions, transport, and quarantines, while meeting SEA LIFE standards.
  • Work closely with the Veterinary team to implement and maintain best practices for animal health and well-being.
  • Being a key player in animal husbandry and life support system maintenance.
  • Supporting the Curator in project managing new display developments, delivering fresh and exciting experiences for our guests.
  • Maintain meticulous animal management and operational records in compliance with SEA LIFE and Merlin standards, as well as local legislative requirements.
  • Elevating standards to adhere to the British and Irish association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) requirements.

This is a full-time fixed term contract until November 2026, working 37.5 hours per week on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays. This role will also include the need to be on call on a rotated basis.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in the aquarium industry.
  • Have expertise in aquatic animal husbandry and life support systems relating to various taxa.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively train and develop team members.
  • Lead by example by having a positive attitude, practicing high standards, modelling professional workplace behaviour, and maintaining a supportive team atmosphere.
  • Ideally, you’ll hold a degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • A PADI Rescue Diver qualification or above (desirable).
  • The ability to perform a range of physical tasks, such as lifting, carrying, and standing for extended periods, in a fast-paced environment while ensuring tasks are completed effectively and safely.
  • A creative mindset for developing engaging educational exhibits.
  • A keen understanding of zoo licensing and aquarium industry regulations is also required.
  • A passion for conservation of species on UK shores and beyond.
