Based: Waltham, Leicestershire

The WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute is Mars Petcare's pet research centre. Our work focuses on the healthcare, nutritional and behavioural needs of pets. The science we deliver supports development of innovative products and services to enable the business to deliver against our Purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS™.

This role is responsible for designing and delivering projects in key strategic research areas for the Biomarkers of Disease Team. Projects may be conducted in house, or in collaboration with internal or external research institutes, as well as with partners across the Mars Veterinary Health business. The role holder will use their deep knowledge of -omics/veterinary/animal science to develop innovative studies and produce results that can be translated into effective product development and service delivery (effective for the consumer and business).

The role holder will be well versed in studies of animal disease and be able deliver subject matter expertise to the team and wider business where needed. The role help to build the reputation of the Biomarkers of Disease team through communicating research outputs to external audiences through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at key external meetings.

What are we looking for?

Education & Professional Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Animal/Veterinary Science, Metabolomics, Genomics, Proteomics, Epidemiology (or related subject areas) with proven relevant experience (e.g. postdoctoral research).

Knowledge / Experience

  • Strong background knowledge in animal disease and/or health.

  • Significant experience using relevant tools and programming languages (e.g., R, Python)

  • Strong understanding of the role of data science in the field of animal/veterinary science.

  • Experience of designing and delivering research projects to solve complex scientific questions.

  • An outstanding drive for results and proven track record in the delivery of research projects.

  • Experience of communicating results and the potential implications of those results to a wide range of audiences including non-scientists

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Effectively manage and deliver multiple high-value interdisciplinary projects in key priority areas. This will include bringing together multiple teams from a wide range of disciplines and making important decisions to ensure successful project delivery.

  • The role holder be responsible for ensuring results are effectively translated into product development and service delivery.

  • Establish a network with key internal and external stakeholders to facilitate project delivery. This will include managing relationships with people across the MARS Petcare Ecosystem as well as with internal and external research institutes to deliver projects with high business value.

  • Communicate scientific outputs through a range of high impact publications, business reports, and presentations at internal and external meetings.

  • Provide advice on matters of subject expertise to the wider business.
