The Role:

  • The Senior Data Engineer role is responsible for evangelizing the adoption of data driven decisions across Mars by leading the development of advanced analytical tools that utilize the vast amounts of data available to the company. These tools will be rooted in a strong statistical foundation and leverage Machine Learning to provide actionable insights for solving business problems or finding opportunities for profitable growth.

  • The Senior Data Engineer may work independently or lead other Data Engineers, receives minimal guidance, is viewed as a natural Project Lead and a go-to in Data Engineering approach and design discussions.

  • Establishes credibility with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation. Facilitates and influences complex or ambiguous business discussions, while flexing to communicate Data Engineering related possibilities and concepts in a relatable way.

  • Possesses strong business acumen preferably in Operations and/or Supply Chain organisations.

  • Is able to influence stakeholders outside of own job area regarding problem solving approaches.

  • Mentors, coaches and Line Manages other Data Engineers

Requirements:

  • You are a strong software engineer with deep expertise in cutting-edge technologies, robust design, development, coding and testing of high quality and scalable solutions.

  • Your deep expertise in data analytics, as well as strong practical experience with modern engineering technologies will enable you and the team to intelligently transform data into value, innovate, create high-standard robust production capabilities and deliver increased business benefits.

  • You will lead and manage engineering projects in collaboration with other team members (including with offshore talent partners) to ensure rapid development of quality, scalable and sustainable data solutions, with global best practices and consistency.

  • You will lead and manage the design of our cloud-based data solutions and models to enable insights and ensure the right technologies are in place for our needs – deliver engagements with the most up-to-date capabilities available in the industry.

  • Engage and collaborate with data and IT owners across Mars to drive data quality and availability, and ensure data improvement plans in place and support effective governance, harvest and maintain coherent Data Models to ensure holistic leadership of the data solution within the environment.

  • Day-to-day you will work in multidisciplinary teams & collaborate with Mars Global Analytics, Big Data Engineering, and Advanced ML teams.

Within this team, you will:

  • Engage with different teams to understand the business vision and opportunities, build solutions using existing or new data sets to create scalable, robust, modularised solutions.

  • Manage a team of data engineers, provide guidance, support to deliver quality products and capabilities.

  • Lead the Architecture Review process by assessing, authorising solutions proposed by different projects, ensuring that standards and patterns are followed by all projects under Supply Chain Analytics area.

  • Evaluate requirements of new tools and technologies, driving discreet proof of concepts and match the right tools with the right use cases.

  • Understand complex business processes and combine your business acumen, problem solving skills, and curiosity to identify value-add opportunities for the applications of Data Engineering.

  • Present results in a cohesive, intuitive, and concise manner that can be understood by both technical and non-technical audiences.

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong experience in an Applied Data Engineering role or equivalent, ideally within the CPG, Consumer Products, Retail, Telecom or Financial Services industries.

  • Technical expertise in Big Data Tech Stack and experience in database and Data Engineering capabilities

  • Rich heritage in designing and building databases, analytics and BI platforms with Big Data.

  • Experience with cloud-based computing platforms like AWS or Azure, Databricks, technologies across traditional and contemporary software (e.g. SQL Server, Hadoop, NoSQL DB), programming languages such as SQL, Java, C#, C++, Python, R and visualization tools

  • Experience with DevOps principles such as CI/CD, unit testing, and AGILE development.

  • Strong problem solving, communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Planning, project management and organizational orchestration skills and a strong attention to detail

  • Experience working with data from multiple, cross functional and disparate systems
