Head of Cocoa Climate Impact Sustainability

The Director-Climate Impact Sustainability, Cocoa is responsible for developing the overarching Climate Impact strategy that will enable excellent delivery of the global Mars Cocoa Enterprise (MCE) climate strategy. As the largest category within Mars Wrigley, Cocoa has a global footprint spanning three continents and impacts more than 300,000 people in its supply chain. This is a mission critical role in enabling Mars to achieve its Sustainable in a Generation ambitions, particularly the Mars, Inc commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050. A key member of the Mars Cocoa Enterprise Sustainability Team, this role is responsible for driving an ambitious agenda that will oversee the development and delivery of the Cocoa for Generations climate sustainability strategy.

What are we looking for?

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree with extensive experience in sustainability, climate strategy development and implementation; with demonstrated experience in global agricultural commodities with complex supply chains. Direct experience in cocoa supply chain is a plus.

  • 8 + years of experience in sustainability.

  • Demonstrated success managing / leading complex program within a dynamic, changing business.

  • Must possess strong sustainability understanding (climate) and business acumen that demonstrates critical thinking and strategic agility skills

  • Must be a relationship builder who is able to work effectively with various levels of associates, stakeholders, and leadership within the business

  • Must be able to develop teams and drive results through both direct and indirect influence

  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills

  • Must be comfortable with working in a global environment

  • Must have ability to build and maintain credibility with senior leaders

What will be your key responsibilities?

Incumbent will be accountable for devising strategies to deliver the current and future environmental impact for cocoa growing families and communities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategy development & Thought Leadership: Lead the development of forward-looking climate strategies within the cocoa enterprise to enable Mars’ ambitions on positive Forest and Climate impact through cocoa. This would include developing comprehensive approaches across all origins of multiple sized farms, leveraging technology solutions and supplier capabilities to define the long-term glidepath for Climate Smart Cocoa. Incumbent will devise strategies which are not only adopted by farmers but can also be scaled across the ecosystem to enable environmental stewardship that leads to adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

  • Strategy will be comprehensive enough to address ghg (offsetting and insetting), land use, water use, role of agroforestry, RegAg and long-range impacts of climate change.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead a team of climate experts with a passion for impact
  • Data Analysis and Analytics: Leverage leading-edge technology to ensure the climate strategy is based on actionable insights and indicators to enable publicly sharing progress and effectively forecast trends that inform cost/benefit decision making.

  • Cross function collaboration and External collaboration : In conjunction with Public Policy, Human Rights, Science & Technology and Sourcing leads, develop a comprehensive strategy that considers the intersectionality between people and climate, and create an enabling environment where our efforts on climate result in net positive impacts policy and strategic performance plan which enables cocoa sector change. In conjunction with our origin teams, develop strategies to support the transfer and adoption of technological and farming innovations for cocoa growing landscapes that enhance climate impact efforts. Additionally, work alongside industry partners (coalitions, industry groups) to develop solutions which benefit the entire sector to mitigate climate impact from cocoa.
