Champion Petfoods is expanding! We are excited to announce we are looking for a Building Maintenance / 4th Class Power Engineer to join our rapidly growing company.

Here's the Scoop – Summary

The Building Maintenance / 4th Class Power Engineer is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of pressure boilers, air compressors and for supporting production operations through timely, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance of facility and process equipment. The role also performs building and facility maintenance, preventative and demand maintenance, pre-operational equipment inspections, spare parts stewardship, and routine housekeeping of maintenance areas and boiler room. This position supports the Acheson kitchen and other remote facilities as required.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Ensure compliance with the Company's policies, practices, and procedures related to Health and Safety, Food Safety, and the Environment.
  • Safely and reliably operate a pressure boiler, Water Softeners, Air Compressors, Heat Exchangers, Diesel Generators, Exhaust Fans, Motors and Pumps and Wastewater Treatment Equipment (DAF System and Screw Press).
  • Support production operations through timely, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance of facility, utilities and process equipment.
  • Perform department preventative maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, routine maintenance work, and relevant documentation.
  • Perform pre-operational inspections and efficiently set up, inspect, and shut down production-related equipment when required.
  • Troubleshoot machine and production related to the utilities issues by diagnosing equipment defects through observation of mechanical devices in operation.
  • Complete plumbing repairs, including pipe threading and piping & tubing installation.
  • Repair door seals, weather strips, door panels, door visual panels, overhead doors, roll-up doors, and related mechanisms.
  • Install TVs, boards, monitors, placards, banners, signage, and related facility items.
  • Install and repair drywall, ceiling tiles, flooring, and perform painting work as required.
  • Perform winter maintenance at the kitchen main lobby and reception areas, and complete outdoor facility inspections and repairs as required.
  • Maintain housekeeping of oils, lubricants, chemical storage areas, empty drums, pails, boxes, the maintenance shop, metal rack, outside scrap bins, and welding station.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, spare parts and safety equipment.
  • Provide support during major maintenance or repair work outside of millwright and electrician core jobs, including dismantling and assembling equipment for deep-cleaning purposes.
  • Act as fire watch during and after hot work jobs.
  • Drive company vehicles for work-related purposes and provide support to Acheson and other remote facilities.

What are we looking for?

  • 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate valid in the Province of Alberta is required.
  • High school education or equivalent is required; a background in any trade is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in building operations, power engineering and maintenance in a manufacturing setting.
  • Able to perform basic building repairs and maintenance, read and interpret drawings, and follow manuals, SOPs, and safety procedures.
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, fire protection systems, and basic HVAC systems.
  • High mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and ability to identify and use hand tools, power tools, and facility maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to assist with small improvement projects related to building and facilities.
  • Strong basic mathematical skills and basic computer competency, including Microsoft Office tools.
  • Good organizational abilities, including planning, prioritization, execution, and attention to detail in all areas of work.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully with diverse groups in a team environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Able to work well under pressure and deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally.
  • Must be in good physical condition, able to lift up to 50 lbs as part of regular duties, and able to pass Drug & Alcohol and Fit-to-Work testing requirements up to 50 lbs
  • Able to work on ladders with arms above shoulder height for extended periods when required, and able to sit, bend, kneel, crouch, and physically inspect company equipment, property, and assets.
  • Must be familiar with snow removal and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a motor vehicle in good repair for work-related travel is required.

Working Conditions

  • This role is for vacation coverage. The successful candidate is required to cover vacations on days, afternoons and night shift.
  • Primary working hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
  • The successful candidate may be required to cover vacations on days, afternoons, and night shifts, and may work rotating hours based on the Dupont Schedule when required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Work environment is in a pet food manufacturing/distribution facility, with exposure to dust, noise, and fluctuating temperatures.
  • Regularly required to work at heights; fall arrest/working at heights training to be provided by the Company as required.
