Job Description

Role Overview

The Truck Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing end-to-end road freight operations across India, with a focus on trailer movements and containerized cargo transport. This role ensures efficient fleet utilization, on-time deliveries, compliance with regulations, and cost optimization while maintaining high safety and service standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operations Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor daily transportation operations for trailers, flatbeds, and container trucks.
  • Ensure timely placement of vehicles for inbound and outbound shipments.
  • Optimize route planning and load allocation to maximize fleet utilization.
  • Manage first and last-mile delivery operations.

2. Fleet & Vendor Management

  • Oversee leased and third-party fleet operations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with transport vendors and fleet owners.
  • Monitor vendor performance (TAT, cost, service quality) and implement improvements.
  • Ensure availability of vehicles based on demand fluctuations.

3. Container & Trailer Movement

  • Manage movement of containers between ports, ICDs, warehouses, and customer locations.
  • Coordinate with shipping lines, CHA agents, and yard teams for smooth container flow.
  • Handle specialized movements such as ODC (Over Dimensional Cargo) on flatbeds if required.

4. Cost & Performance Optimization

  • Track and control transportation costs including freight rates, fuel, tolls, and detention.
  • Analyze KPIs such as on-time delivery, turnaround time, load utilization, and cost per km.
  • Implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.

5. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to Motor Vehicles Act and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain documentation related to permits, insurance, PUC, and driver compliance.
  • Enforce safety standards for drivers, vehicles, and cargo handling.

6. Team Leadership

  • Lead and manage operations team including planners, coordinators, and supervisors.
  • Train and mentor team members to improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (warehouse, procurement, customer service).

7. Technology & Reporting

  • Utilize TMS (Transport Management Systems) and GPS tracking tools for real-time monitoring.
  • Generate MIS reports and dashboards for management review.
  • Drive digital initiatives to enhance visibility and automation.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of road freight operations in India
  • Expertise in container logistics, trailer operations, and flatbed transport
  • Route planning and fleet optimization skills
  • Vendor negotiation and cost management
  • Knowledge of compliance and safety standards
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Leadership and team management

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field
  • 8–15 years of experience in trucking/logistics operations
  • Prior experience handling containerized cargo and trailer fleets is essential
  • Experience working with ports, ICDs, or large distribution networks preferred
