Engineering Manager
Fully-remote
Core hours 10–4.30
Job Description
FitXR is a fitness technology company working at the cutting edge of VR and MR. We’re a funded scale-up on a mission to impact more lives than any other fitness company, and build a healthier world for everyone.
We started life in 2016 in a garden shed in the UK. Today, we’re building FitXR, one of the top-downloaded apps on the Meta Quest store. We’ve raised close to $40m from top investors such as Maveron, Hiro, BoostVC and TriplePoint.
We’re a remote-first team of just under 100 people from across the US, UK, and Spain, and we’re committed to making it simpler and more enjoyable for people to get moving. We believe that anybody can fall in love with fitness and make movement part of their life.
Our team is distributed across Europe and the US. We’re guided by our Principles of Play: eight core beliefs about how we treat each other and our community. We make space for every voice, believe in the importance of a learner’s mindset, and prioritize team success over individual glory.
The FitXR app contains a growing range of fitness studios, where members can choose from box workouts with world-class trainers like Olympian Nicola Adams, powerful HIIT workouts, and immersive dance classes. While nothing compares to trying it yourself, you can watch a trailer here.
FitXR is available on Meta Quest 2 and has been downloaded by over a million people worldwide. Featured in Forbes, Empire, T3, Washington Post, Men's Health, GQ and more. In 2022, FitXR ranked 6th in The Information’s 50 Most Promising Startups.
The Role
As Engineering Manager, your mission is to bring FitXR’s Game Programmers up to their highest potential, curating a culture of continuous improvement across our whole Engineering function that will extend from engineers’ personal development to their success in Agile teams.
It’ll be up to you to make sure that each engineer has - and takes - opportunities to grow and develop in the direction that’s right for them, whilst enriching the impact they have on the company. You’ll make sure that the team has the right people and skills to deliver exceptional game experiences for our customers.
You’ll create a sense of identity and shared purpose for your team in a cross-functional environment, creating space and appetite for knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation within (and beyond) the team. If your capacity and capability allow, you’ll also be welcomed into taking an active role in the team’s delivery practices and processes.
What you’ll do 👀
Directly manage a team of 5-10 Engineers, responsible for their pastoral care, performance and development in their role
Use a blend of coaching and mentoring to support and challenge your team to their greatest potential
Perform 1:1s, performance reviews, skill mapping and hiring to best equip the team to succeed
Actively drive and inspire Engineering best practices, and a culture of agility and continuous improvement
Input towards the methods and practices deployed by our cross-functional delivery teams, possibly getting hands-on in overseeing the delivery if you’re keen and capable
Tech Stack 💻
Unity
Perforce
Jenkins
C# .NET microservices
Kubernetes on AWS
Meta Quest and Pico VR platforms (with more likely to follow in future)

You should apply if ✅
- You have experience working in software engineering within the gaming industry (if this was using Unity, even better!)
You have any experience working with service-based games - FitXR is an active service, and we’re hoping you will help us to improve our delivery and quality outcomes, so this experience would be a major plus
You have prior direct experience of performing engineering activities, especially with a quality focus, that enables you to relate to and communicate effectively around technical work items.
- You’ve got some experience of managing teams, of any size
This is a team we expect to grow, and we’ll support the development of the right candidate to grow with their team
You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced delivery environment, and know your way around an Agile process
You have a passion for leading, coaching and mentoring people to do amazing things
Our mission is to make fitness fun and accessible for everyone. To build inclusive products, we need to build an inclusive team. Please know that this list is indicative and that we would still love to hear from you even if you feel you only are a 75% match. Skills can be learnt, diversity cannot. We promote a diverse and inclusive culture at FitXR.
Our interview process takes place on Google Hangouts and tends to consist of the following stages:
- Initial screen (talent team)
- Hiring Manager
- Cross-functional team interview
- Final interview
Please let us know if you require any accommodations for the interview process, and we’ll do our best to provide assistance.

The FlexScore® is the result of a rigorous 2-step verification of a company’s flexibility
First we assess the flexibility options FitXR provides and then we anonymously survey a statistically significant proportion of their employees to make sure FitXR is as flexible as they say they are. Our assessment is based on the six key elements of flexibility: location, hours, autonomy, benefits, role modelling and work-life balance.
We ask the hard questions so you don’t have to.
